Calling 'Resister' a Star Wars-inspired expansion is putting it mildly. Rather than just tossing in a few cameos, the developers have woven that signature galaxy-far-far-away aesthetic into the official Destiny lore. Set after the events of the previous expansion, 'End of Destiny', the Drifter tasks Guardians with thwarting the new Varant Empire. The Empire’s new Cabal look suspiciously like Stormtroopers, wielding blaster-style rifles and deploying walkers that feel ripped straight from an Imperial hangar.

A new lawless zone has been added, featuring extraction mechanics where you hunt for loot and try to make it out in one piece. Guardians can now arm themselves with laser weaponry and the 'Blade of Practice', which is essentially a lightsaber in all but name. Thanks to a free trial running until the 10th, the game saw its concurrent player count jump from a steady 20,000 to 71,278.

Steam user sentiment for Destiny 2: Resister is currently 'Mixed' (263 reviews, 56% positive). While players seem to appreciate the Star Wars-themed toys and find it an improvement over the previous 'Boundary of Fate' expansion, the community is still nursing old wounds. The fact that previously purchased expansion campaigns have been vaulted creates a steep barrier for new players trying to understand the plot. Add in complaints about aggressive monetization, and it seems this expansion might struggle to turn the tide for the long-term.
