Uwe Boll, a director known for his unique career, is once again turning his attention to a game-based film.

According to an exclusive report by the entertainment trade outlet The Hollywood Reporter, German director Uwe Boll is producing an unofficial sequel to his 2003 video game-based film, 'House of the Dead'. The genre is zombie horror, and the title is '23 Years Later: The Castle of the Dead'.

Principal photography for the film is set to begin in Germany on September 5. Original cast members Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer are returning. The script was co-written with Lutz Geiger, with Michael Roesch handling production and Boris Wolffgardt participating as a co-producer. Since Uwe Boll does not hold the rights, there is no official connection to Sega's original 'House of the Dead' video game.

Uwe Boll is a film director who has caused various controversies in the gaming industry. In particular, by creating game-based films with low quality and lack of polish, he played a major role in cementing the stereotype that 'game-based films cannot succeed'. All the game-based films he participated in, such as 'House of the Dead', the 'Alone in the Dark' series, the 'BloodRayne' trilogy, and the 'In the Name of the King' (Dungeon Siege) trilogy, were panned by critics and audiences alike. He announced his retirement in 2016, but returned in 2022 to begin producing films again.

The original 'House of the Dead' followed students who went to an island to attend a party and discovered a horde of zombies, focusing on the survivors hiding and fighting in an abandoned house. While the specific plot of the new film remains undisclosed, Michael Roesch told The Hollywood Reporter, "In a way, it's an upgrade—we're moving from a house full of zombies to a castle full of zombies."

Meanwhile, Uwe Boll attempted to crowdfund the aforementioned horror film last January, when the title was '23 Years Later: Return to Zombie Island'. Uwe Boll stated that he started the campaign because news emerged that Sega was producing a new official 'House of the Dead' film. He explained, "I couldn't use the same title because someone else might make a film under the 'House of the Dead' name," adding, "I'd rather tell them to produce with us and buy some perks." The crowdfunding campaign failed to reach its target amount and was abandoned.
