Ten years since the 'calm before the storm', Sudden Attack is finally bringing back Miya and Kim Ji-yoon, the central characters from the ill-fated Sudden Attack 2, claiming they are still 'obsessed with the illusion that a storm hits this time of year'.

Nexon announced on the 30th that it would be adding the Miya & Kim Ji-yoon characters to Sudden Attack. These characters, set for release on the 2nd, were originally the face of Sudden Attack 2 but were famously scrubbed from existence following intense controversy regarding their sexualised designs. Unlike their original debut, these resurrected figures will be available for permanent purchase rather than as a limited-time offer.

For the uninitiated, Sudden Attack 2 launched on July 6, 2016, as a successor to the original, only to crash and burn within three weeks of service. Just before launch, a developer famously goaded the community by declaring it the 'calm before the storm' and challenging players to see who was truly 'incompetent'. That quote has lived on as a legendary meme for the last decade.

The announcement, which serves as a rather ironic tenth-anniversary tribute, is littered with self-deprecating nods to that history. The Sudden Attack YouTube channel remarked, "We are still obsessed with the illusion that a storm hits this time of year. But we know the truth. We were the incompetent ones. Ten years of the calm before the storm—it’s time to break free from this cycle." The official website echoed this sentiment with a blunt, "We were incompetent. So, we brought them back."

Back in the day, Miya was framed as a global freelance mercenary, while Kim Ji-yoon was pitched as a South Korean special forces operative specialising in underwater infiltration. Whether those backstories will remain intact in this new iteration remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Nexon is rolling out a series of events to mark the return of these characters. From the release date until the 16th, players can participate in the Miya & Kim Ji-yoon release celebration multi-count event, along with a chat event to commemorate the start of Season 3.
