The decision to charge for a Power-Up Kit on a title that is already a remake—'Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake'—has sparked accusations of greedy monetization tactics.

Koei Tecmo Games announced on the 9th that 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake with Power-Up Kit' will launch on January 29 next year. The publisher frames this as the ultimate version of their first major remake in the series, packed with new features to celebrate the franchise's 40th anniversary.

What exactly are you getting for your money? There are three main additions. First, there is the 'Jewel' system, allowing you to unlock various commands based on your rank—whether you are a ruler, governor, or military advisor—making character progression feel fresh each time. Next, we have the 'Turning Point' system, where the ebb and flow of battle shift based on 'energy' accumulated through time, natural disasters, or major clashes. Finally, they have tossed in five additional fictional scenarios and new 'Talents' for your generals.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake with Power-Up Kit will launch on PC, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch, with full Korean language support. Pricing is, well, ambitious: the bundle including the base game is 11,880 yen (approx. 110,000 KRW) for PC and 10,780 yen (approx. 100,000 KRW) for consoles. If you just want the Power-Up Kit, it is 5,280 yen (approx. 49,000 KRW) for PC and 4,730 yen (approx. 43,000 KRW) for consoles. For the 'Treasure Box' collectors edition, prepare to shell out 18,700 yen (approx. 170,000 KRW) for PC or 17,600 yen (approx. 160,000 KRW) for consoles, which includes physical goodies like a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle and the extra scenario 'Age of Division'.

Needless to say, the fan base is less than impressed. Since the original 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake'—which launched last October—was already built upon the foundation of the original game and its own Power-Up Kit, many long-time fans feel that selling a separate Power-Up Kit for a remake is nothing short of a betrayal.

On the bright side, the base game is receiving a free update featuring Chinese voice-overs, the ability to change territories and rulers, and a new scenario titled 'Xuande's Ambition.'
