Rumors have emerged that the disc drive may be removed in the PS6 to lower manufacturing costs.

'KeplerL2', who claims to be a Sony insider, recently disclosed information regarding the device via the overseas gaming community 'NeoGaf'. According to this, the disc drive present in previous models is expected to disappear entirely in the next-generation console. It was also claimed that the base storage capacity would not exceed 1TB. The core of this is that these measures are the most intuitive way to cut costs to keep the console price at a reasonable level.

Considering that the PS5 Pro has a 2TB capacity, 1TB might seem somewhat insufficient. Regarding this, KeplerL2 stated that neural network-based texture compression technology will be introduced, which will reduce game installation sizes compared to the previous generation.

If the disc drive is indeed removed, it could be disappointing news for users who prefer physical packages. However, since this would cause issues with compatibility with discs used on the PS5, it is necessary to wait for Sony's official announcement.

Meanwhile, Sony announced a price hike for all PS5 models on the 27th, citing continued pressure on the global economy. Prices have been increased in most major countries, including the US, Europe, the UK, and Japan, while the domestic retail price has not yet been announced.
