There’s all sorts of chatter about opening the Strait of Hormuz and uranium dilution, and while I’ll offer a polite round of applause, the word 'end' feels rather ominous. History—both in our world and within the digital realms we frequent—has taught us that peace treaties and ceasefire declarations rarely lead to a fairy-tale ending.

In many games, a peace treaty is little more than a cooldown period for sides to rearm and plan their next backstabbing move. While they might preach mutual cooperation and harmony to the public, they are secretly churning out war machines or building intelligence networks behind closed doors. Hoping for a more lasting peace in reality, today we look at some of the shadiest, most precarious armistices and betrayal-filled treaties in gaming history.

After the Continental War, the victorious Osean Federation constructed a massive international space elevator, hailing it as the ultimate symbol of postwar recovery and peace. They promised to station peacekeepers across the continent and provide free energy—a lovely bit of PR. However, the defeated Kingdom of Erusea didn't buy it. To them, it looked like an imperialist eyesore and a blatant military occupation of their sovereignty. Gritting their teeth, Erusea quietly began mass-producing drones, cleverly evading the weak oversight of the ceasefire regime.

Osea, drunk on its own sense of peace, let its guard down. In 2019, Erusea launched a surprise attack without even a formal declaration of war, activating drones hidden in civilian containers to lay waste to the Osean mainland. The pride of the Osean fleet, the Kestrel II, was sunk with pathetic ease, and their precious space elevator was seized. This stunning preemptive strike turned the continent into a war zone, sparking the 'Lighthouse War.' Is a 'symbol of peace' just a giant target waiting to be smashed?

Crushed in the Second World War, the Soviet Union was forced into a humiliating peace treaty that demanded total disarmament. The Allies then installed Alexander Romanov, a former aristocrat and supposedly a peace-loving soul, as the General Secretary. Romanov played the role perfectly, praising the Allies in public and masquerading as a pacifist to melt away Western suspicion. Little did the Allies know, this was all a massive buildup for a revenge plot against the very people who had trampled his nation.

Romanov secretly produced the 'Kirov' airships—a weapon not mentioned in any treaty—and rebuilt his strength using Yuri's psychic forces. Once the Allied surveillance was neutralized, the Soviets surged into the US mainland via Mexico, raining shells upon them. The sight of a Kirov airship, emblazoned with a giant shark, floating over New York and smashing the Statue of Liberty is pure shock. It was the grand, terrifying overture to the Third World War, born from a fake peace.

Faced with the Burning Legion, a threat that terrified the entire universe, the long-time rivals, the Alliance and the Horde, formed a non-aggression pact. The war was so desperate that they managed to set aside their deep-seated hatred, and thanks to the dedication of the coalition, the threat was averted. But peace was agonizingly brief. When a powerful resource called 'Azerite' began leaking from the wounds left by Sargeras, the scramble for power began anew. While the Alliance claimed they wanted to heal the planet, Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner saw it as the ultimate weapon to annihilate her foes.

Sylvanas’s manipulation was wicked. She stoked 'preemptive fear,' convincing the Horde hardliners that the Alliance was about to strike first. Before the ink on the ceasefire treaty had even dried, she launched the 'War of the Thorns,' an ambush on Night Elf territory. She went a step further, burning down Teldrassil, the World Tree and source of all life, along with the civilians living upon it. Naturally, an enraged Alliance struck back, plunging Azeroth once more into the mud of war.

When the UED (United Earth Directorate) expeditionary fleet arrived, treating the Koprulu sector like a playground and even enslaving the Zerg, the local factions realized they faced extinction. They formed an unthinkable coalition: the wicked Queen of Blades Kerrigan, the Protoss hero Fenix, the Terran rebel Jim Raynor, and even the remnants of Mengsk’s forces. Yesterday’s enemies joined hands. This tear-jerking alliance successfully breached the UED defenses and reclaimed Korhal.

But the warmth didn't last a day. The very next day after the liberation of Korhal, Kerrigan pulled the ultimate backstab. She led her swarm to ambush the unsuspecting allied base, brutally murdering her former allies, Fenix and General Edmund Duke. The temporary alliance, built on promises of peace, was sacrificed overnight for Zerg supremacy. Raynor retreated, vowing to kill her with his own hands one day. As we later learned, Kerrigan had been planning this betrayal long before the alliance was ever forged.

To end the Second Northern War, the Nilfgaardian Empire and the leaders of the Northern Kingdoms gathered in Cintra to hammer out a peace treaty. On the surface, it looked like a beautiful diplomatic compromise, but in reality, it was a deal where the Northern Kingdoms grabbed significant territorial gains. Furthermore, the Northern coalition reneged on their promise of amnesty, branding the Nilfgaardian Scoia'tael elven officers as war criminals and promptly executing them. It was the cruel postwar retaliation born of a victor’s hubris.

Unsurprisingly, such a lopsided and unequal ceasefire didn't last. The fragile mutual defense pact between the Northern Kingdoms crumbled like a sandcastle the moment King Foltest of Temeria was assassinated. King Henselt of Kaedwen, showing zero tact, invaded allied territory, shattering all remaining trust. In truth, the Emperor Emhyr var Emreis of Nilfgaard was behind all the chaos, sharpening his blade for revenge. Through the assassinations, he fractured the Northern Kingdoms and the mages before sending his massive imperial army north across the Yaruga River. The flimsy peace treaty was torn to shreds, and the Third Northern War engulfed the continent once more.
