Look, let's be honest, Ion Lands and publisher 505 Games are finally bringing us the cyberpunk life sim we didn't know we desperately needed, Nivalis Nights. Originally developed under the working title Nivalis, the studio locked in the official name earlier this year, promising a rather peculiar blend of bleak, gloomy dystopia and surprisingly cosy everyday living.

Naturally, fans have been foaming at the mouth for this ever since the initial reveal, mostly because it shares a universe with the developer's previous outing, Cloudpunk. You won't have to wait much longer either, as Nivalis Nights is scheduled to launch for PC on September 30th.

Nivalis Nights drops you right into the sprawling cyberpunk metropolis of Nivalis for a proper life simulation experience. While it shares the same universe as Cloudpunk, the studio has thankfully swapped out delivery driver duties for something far more hands-on: running your very own businesses. The graphics have also received a lovely glow-up, shifting from top-down voxels to glorious 3D voxels that capture the intricate, neon-soaked grime of the city.

The game's primary stage is an absolute behemoth of a city stretching all the way from the ocean floor to the clouds above. Nivalis is a properly dangerous playground patrolled by the corporate security force CorpSec, not to mention a mysterious serial killer lurking in the shadows, yet it somehow remains a vibrant home for neon lights and eccentric residents just trying to get by.

The city is carved up into distinct districts, each boasting its own unmistakable flavour. The Beach Promenade district lets you stroll along with the ocean breeze, packed with bustling shopping streets and hidden eateries. On the flip side, the Skyhigh Garden district serves up an oriental vibe with traditional Japanese-style gates and hanging gardens, offering a rather posh spot to gaze at the clouds from high above the streets.

You'll be getting around via public transport like HOVA taxis and trains, and once you're inside a district, you can explore buildings seamlessly without sitting through a single loading screen. If walking or taking the tube isn't quite your style, you can even pilot your very own boat to cruise the oceans and waterways surrounding the outer edges of the city. Naturally, a dynamic day-night cycle and realistic weather systems are all thrown into the mix.

The absolute beating heart of the game is managing and expanding your food and beverage empire. You start humble, clutching the keys to a tiny ramen-bar style noodle stall as your first proper step into the business world. From there, you'll need to turn a profit and show off some serious business acumen to buy up and run bigger establishments, ranging from proper restaurants to bustling late-night nightclubs.

Running a successful joint means stocking up on a diverse menu and keeping those picky customers happy. You've got everything from cola chicken and Meridian pizza to seasonal summer salads, veggie coffee, meat and seafood soups, and various desserts. Of course, if you actually want to sell edible food, you'll need to acquire the right cooking equipment and recipes first.

Managing your supply chain is just as crucial, mate. You can pop down to spots like the Meridian Market to buy ingredients from local greengrocers or butchers. If you want to cut costs and boost quality even further, you can rent a cutting-edge greenhouse in the industrial district to grow your own crops, or head down to the docks to catch fresh seafood yourself.

Of course, surviving in such a cut-throat market doesn't mean you have to play completely by the book. Under the cover of the city's curfew, you can slip past security networks and pull off some dodgy, illegal sabotage against your competitors. Just keep in mind that your rivals can pull the exact same tricks on your establishments, so you'd better set up some proper defences.

When you're finally done grinding away at the daily hustle, you'll need somewhere to crash, and the housing content is surprisingly robust. You begin your domestic life in a tiny, modest studio apartment, but as your bank account swells, you can upgrade to a spacious multi-level loft or a standalone house. Each pad can be decked out entirely to your own tastes using furniture and trinkets bought from local merchants.

If interior design happens to be your true calling, you can take on custom decorating gigs for other residents. It's a cheeky little side hustle that brings in extra cash and deepens your ties with the locals. You can also kick back with some high-stakes cyberpunk chess tournaments if you fancy testing your wits in a minigame.

Aside from the thousands of nameless background citizens wandering the streets, Nivalis Nights features over 130 named characters with their own goals and backstories. The developer proudly notes that they brought in voice acting for more than 135 major and supporting characters, a massive feat achieved only after sifting through over 6,000 auditions.

Among them is Salt Pete, a robot boatman you'll run into down at the docks, sporting a straw hat and ferrying folks across the bay in a homemade skiff—the very first character spotlighted by the dev team. Meanwhile, the studio confirmed that Camus, the protagonist from the previous game Cloudpunk, won't be making an appearance here, leaving room for an entirely fresh cast of faces in the exact same skyline.

Nivalis Nights is slated to launch on Steam on September 30th.
