While not strictly a live-action affair, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has also spanned three films, effectively kicking down the door for this new era of game-to-film adaptations.

With a slate of high-profile adaptations on the horizon, it is only natural for us gamers to be excited. However, I am here to highlight those 'hidden gems' you might have overlooked—the kind of masterpieces that are simply too good to keep to oneself. I assure you, these are arguably the pinnacle of game-based cinema, so do yourself a favour and watch them.

Released in 2010, this live-action film is based on the legendary fighting game series famous for having the most dysfunctional family tree in history. In the original games, the cycle of fathers and grandfathers killing each other is constant—only for the dead to return, great-grandfathers to pop up out of nowhere, and mothers and grandmothers joining the fray. Given that just explaining this lineage would take a solid 30 minutes, the film bravely decides to completely rewrite the relationships and the plot.

The character redesigns alone are enough to pique one's curiosity. Forget the Devil Gene of the Mishima clan; here, the protagonist Jin Kazama is just a fighter clawing his way up from the gutter to win the tournament. Steve Fox is reduced to a mere ex-boxer turned sponsor, Heihachi is a powerless corporate suit, Kazuya wields an axe, and Yoshimitsu is a villainous samurai mercenary hired by Kazuya. Meanwhile, Nina and Anna find themselves in a steamy scene with Kazuya, and Christie Monteiro becomes Jin's girlfriend. By abandoning the source material to craft its own unique brand of soap opera, this film truly carved out a niche as a masterpiece of the genre.

Released in 1993, this was the world's first officially licensed live-action film based on a game. While there were non-official video series before, this was the real deal. While the source material is known for its bright, fairy-tale atmosphere, the film shatters those expectations with a gritty, B-movie dystopian aesthetic. It is a clear display of the director’s artistic ambition—an attempt to stand as an independent cinematic work rather than merely chasing the game's coat-tails.

True to this philosophy, the characters have been thoroughly reimagined. The Goombas and Koopa Troopas are humans who have been mutated into reptilian humanoids by King Koopa’s de-evolution gun. Even Koopa himself is a Tyrannosaurus rex that evolved into a human—the perfect antithesis to the source. Legendary for a poster that leaves you questioning what you are actually looking at, The King of Fighters is a live-action adaptation of the classic SNK fighting game. Given that KOF is a massive crossover universe with a staggering roster, adapting it into a single film is a Herculean task—yet, they managed to do it.

The protagonists are Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami. In the film, Kyo is a white man of Asian descent, though in flashbacks, the character appears fully East Asian. One can only assume that the sheer power of the flames burned the melanin right out of the character's system, causing an interdimensional 'evolution.' Iori Yagami, usually a loner, is paired with Mai Shiranui as a CIA agent, while the final boss, Rugal, is reimagined as a short, clean-shaven villain who prefers spray-and-pray tactics. The fact that the film shares almost nothing with the source material is a testament to the director’s stubborn refusal to be bound by accuracy, relying entirely on the actors' commitment to carry the roles.

Released in 2021, White Day: Broken Barrier faced heavy criticism for 'ruining' the world-building of Sonnori's horror classic. However, this is a misunderstood gem. The film borrows only the title, the school, and a few character names, functioning as an entirely original story. Whether you know the game or not, you are treated to an 'unpredictable narrative' that makes it a film for everyone.

To help the audience identify the characters, the film uses helpful entry cues and CG subtitles. The seemingly awkward dialogue and stiff action actually serve to ground the film in a 'sincere reality.' The ghost makeup is a loving homage to B-grade horror, and the protagonist’s lack of agency is a poignant expression of 'human fragility.' And for those complaining about the lack of action, the film even throws in a night-fighting sequence that rivals The Winter Soldier. Its box office failure is merely proof that this is a 'hidden treasure' for true aficionados.

This live-action adaptation of the fighting game is packed with decent action from its female leads and the kind of deliciously campy fun that makes for a perfect family movie night. It nails that elusive B-grade charm, and the common sentiment that it offers plenty of 'fan service' just goes to show how much this film values its audience's entertainment.

The actor playing Ayane deserves praise for perfectly embodying the character with nothing but a purple wig, despite being more than twice the age of the original character. The highlight, however, is the scene where Christie, fresh out of the shower, levitates her bra in mid-air while simultaneously taking out a team of assassins, only to catch and put it on. That 10-second mid-air suspension, followed by the line 'Hook it up' while aiming a pistol, is a cinematic moment for the ages—rivaling Spider-Man’s 'catching a falling lunch' scene. A true masterpiece of modern cinema.
