It turns out that Little Mermaid, from the Old Tales squad, had been single-handedly shielding humanity for the past 70 years while hidden away. Given this scale of heroism, which dwarfs the average Nikke, her reputation is skyrocketing. She left quite an impact during the 2.5-year anniversary, but frankly, few of us realised just how monumental her role had been. The 2nd Generation Fairy Tale squad, successors to the Goddesses
Let’s take a trip down memory lane to the first Rapture invasion, where the 'Goddess Squad'—Dorothy, Snow White, Scarlet, Red Hood, Rapunzel, and Lilith—made their legendary stand. Seeking to surpass them, the Human Coalition forces launched the '2nd Generation Fairy Tale Model' project. Spearheaded by Abe, who volunteered to become a Nikke, the roster was finalised as Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Red Shoes, Hansel, and Gretel.
Little Mermaid was designed to manipulate foes with her 'Word of Command' and strike them with 'Bubble,' a unique weapon. The Word of Command lets her dictate enemy actions—ordering them to 'stop,' 'halt,' or 'sleep.' It’s a terrifyingly potent ability that works on humans too, making it unavoidable without the special helmet developed by Abe. Consequently, Little Mermaid is forced to communicate only through babbling sounds like 'Ah-oo,' as using her command power causes severe strain on her vocal cords, leading to bouts of coughing. This is the primary reason Abe forbade her from speaking.
Her weapon, 'Bubble,' is a high-density liquid metal inspired by 'The Little Mermaid' fairy tale. By practicing, she learned to apply commands only to enemies coated in this substance, effectively reducing friendly fire. It’s a versatile tool capable of crushing boulders, and it evolved into something even more lethal as she mastered it. It’s just a crying shame that this weapon’s true potential wouldn't be fully realised until long after.
Tragedy strikes without warning
While waiting to deploy with her squad, news arrived that Cinderella would head out first. They went to see her off, only to find Cinderella’s eyes glowing red. She had been corrupted by the Raptures without anyone noticing. Little Mermaid managed to use her Word of Command to stop her comrade from attacking, but Cinderella broke free of the control far faster than anticipated. According to the lore, Cinderella even shattered Little Mermaid’s jaw to prevent her from using any more commands. After being sidelined, Little Mermaid was repaired through Abe’s efforts. She joined Red Shoes, Hansel, and Gretel for a second round against the now-renamed Anachiro. They attempted to lure Cinderella into close-quarters combat, but the intervention of the Human Coalition caused the operation to collapse. They were separated once more, only to reunite with Cinderella after she was finally freed from corruption.
Though Abe told her Cinderella was free, Little Mermaid kept a wary distance. When Cinderella seemed confused, Little Mermaid finally opened her mouth to say, 'Give me just a little time.' Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Red Shoes offered to talk to Cinderella alone. Moments later, a deafening blast erupted from their room. Little Mermaid and the others rushed in to find Red Shoes with her legs severed and a hole in her chest, facing Cinderella.
In truth, Cinderella’s corruption was all a scheme by Red Shoes. Cinderella, enraged, had dealt with her, but the others lacked the context. Little Mermaid, forced to judge by the carnage in front of her, didn't trust Cinderella’s explanation. A deeply disappointed Cinderella asked, 'Why didn't you offer me a single word of comfort?' before walking away. Little Mermaid was left stunned and speechless—mostly because she hadn't said a thing.
Following this, the Little Mermaid squad was detained by the Human Coalition, who feared they might also be corrupted. Oswald eventually brought proof that Red Shoes was the true mastermind, clearing Cinderella’s name. Tasked with eliminating Cinderella, Oswald and the others who knew the truth set out to reconcile. The 2nd Generation Fairy Tale squad regrouped and assaulted the Orbital Elevator. Little Mermaid’s ability shone again as she blanketed the area in Bubble, freezing the Raptures in their tracks, allowing Hansel, Gretel, and Cinderella to finish them off. Having reached the Orbital Elevator—a feat even the Goddess squad hadn't managed—the team stared into space as the temperature began to rise. Then, Little Mermaid uttered the ultimate taboo: 'I have a bad feeling about this.' Her vision turned blood red immediately after.
A Goddess of Victory who fought alone for over 100 years
The first friend of the Forbist Leviathan
Caught in a surprise attack, Little Mermaid plummeted from the Elevator to the surface. Thankfully, her Bubble broke her fall. She spent decades wandering the surface searching for her comrades, but as her body and mind began to wear down, she eventually drifted across the sea on her Bubble, losing consciousness before washing up on a remote shore.
She woke up in a cave to the sound of voices, encountering a Nikke covered in black liquid. This was her first meeting with 'Leviathan,' her first friend on the surface. There was a small scuffle where Little Mermaid attacked her with Bubble, believing her to be a Heretic, but they cleared up the misunderstanding quickly.
Despite the rough start, they became close. Little Mermaid named her 'Levi' after the 'LEV-20765' on her dog tag, though Leviathan complained it was a lazy name. Exhausted, Little Mermaid stayed with the lone Leviathan for a month. She realised the black liquid Leviathan produced was the same liquid metal as her own Bubble, and she taught Leviathan how to manipulate it. One wonders how Little Mermaid would react if she knew how Leviathan uses those techniques now.
The month passed quickly. Just as they decided to travel together, the massive special-class entity 'Gluttony' appeared. While Little Mermaid urged Leviathan to run while she held the line, Leviathan insisted on fighting. However, when faced with Gluttony, Leviathan froze, and Little Mermaid ended up being swallowed. New friends after 70 years
Little Mermaid survived inside Gluttony using her Bubble. It really makes you realise what a genius Abe was to design her that way. Realising Gluttony’s digestive juices couldn't dissolve her Bubble, she built a sanctuary. Being alive was one thing, but escaping felt impossible.
Loneliness gnawed at her, even with her Bubble creations and board games. A month later, she found a way to send Bubble out through Gluttony’s breathing holes. She gave her Bubble two commands: first, to signal her friends that she was inside, and second, to dissipate into a cloud if they didn't find her within six months. This proved pivotal in the present day.
Years later, she was visited by three unexpected guests: Mihara, Yuni, and Mori. Learning 70 years had passed, she tried to help them escape, intentionally hiding the fact that she was trapped inside Gluttony to prevent a panic. The lie backfired—Mori’s panic triggered a calling signal, revealing their presence to Gluttony.
She calmed Mori down, but it was too late. Their cover was blown, and Raptures swarmed. Refusing to let her new friends die, Little Mermaid lied again to get Mihara, Yuni, and Mori out of Gluttony. As they retreated and Mori screamed her name, Little Mermaid prepared for her final stand, ready to vanish like the Little Mermaid of legend.
Reunited comrades and the looming threat
Remembering the Cinderella who once led her, Little Mermaid vowed to be a worthy Goddess of Victory. Suddenly, Gluttony began to convulse; Mihara, Yuni, and Mori had returned to attack it. Mori dived back in, urging her to escape together. Usually, one would tearfully say 'YES,' but Little Mermaid refused with a 'NO'—much to Mori’s frustration.
However, Mori’s plea to 'live together for a happy ending' changed her mind. During the Gluttony raid, they used crystals from the surface and AA Pillar energy to bring the beast down. The shocker? They only destroyed its throat, not the main body. Despite the setback, Little Mermaid wept tears of joy upon seeing the surface for the first time in 70 years, joined by a sobbing Mori. Suddenly, the Cinderella Bubble doll she’d sent to the surface appeared, followed by the familiar figure of Cinderella herself. After 70 years, they finally touched hands and shared a tearful embrace. A dreamlike week passed, during which she even recognised Abe, who had become Grave. Just as she and Cinderella prepared to return to the Commander, Little Mermaid screamed, trembling—the cloud had been destroyed.
Little Mermaid had commanded her Bubble to form a cloud to shroud the 'Rapture Queen' in space, a master plan she maintained alone for 70 years. The latest side story, EDEN SPEAR, notes this cloud spanned 120km—roughly the distance from Seoul to Taean in South Korea. It wasn't a small task, and she successfully blinded the Queen for seven decades.
Fans are saying that without Little Mermaid, who fought to blind the Queen, and Cinderella, who intercepted the Queen from the Orbital Elevator, humanity would have fallen long ago. 갓데스의 뒤를 이을 2세대 페어리 테일
잠시 먼 옛날로 돌아가 보자. 랩쳐가 인류를 덮친 1차 랩쳐 침공 당시 승리의 여신이라 불리는 '갓데스 스쿼드' 소속 니케 도로시, 스노우 화이트, 홍련, 레드 후드, 라푼젤, 릴리스의 활약이 이어졌다. 이에 인류연합군은 이들을 뛰어넘는 '2세대 페어리 테일 모델' 제작에 착수했다. 스스로 니케가 되길 자처한 인물 에이브를 중심으로 개발을 시작해 만들어진 2세대 페어리 테일 니케가 바로 신데렐라, 리틀 머메이드, 레드 슈즈, 헨젤, 그레텔이다.
리틀 머메이드는 '언령'으로 적을 조종하고, 전용 무기 '물거품'으로 적을 공격하는 콘셉트로 제작됐다. 언령은 리틀 머메이드의 말로 적에게 영향을 주는 능력이다. 정지, 멈춰, 잠들어라 등 강력한 행동 제어가 가능하다. 이 언령은 인간에게도 영향을 주는 강력한 능력이다. 작중 에이브가 개발한 특수 헬멧이 없으면, 이를 피할 방법이 없다고 한다. 따라서, 리틀 머메이드는 항상 '아우', '아우아' 같은 옹알이 소리만 내게 된다. 장점만 있는 건 아니다. 언령을 사용하면, 리틀 머메이드가 연이어 기침을 하는 등 성대에 안좋은 영향을 줬다. 에이브가 리틀 머메이드에게 말을 하지 못하게 하는 가장 큰 이유다.
전용 무기 물거품은 모티브 '인어 공주'에서 따온 고밀도 액체 금속이다. 이를 이용해 리틀 머메이드는 물거품이 붙은 적에게만 언령을 구사하는 기술을 연습해 아군 오사를 줄였다. 공격 능력도 뛰어나 바위 정도는 쉽게 박살이 난다. 이 무장은 작중 리틀 머메이드의 숙련도가 점점 올라감에 따라 다재다능한 무기로 재탄생한다. 그러나 이 무기가 빛을 보는 건 먼 뒤의 이야기인 게 안타까울 뿐이다.
비극은 예고 없이 찾아온다
스쿼드 동료들과 함께 전장 투입을 기다리던 중 마침내 신데렐라가 먼저 출격한다는 소식을 듣는다. 함께 기뻐하며 출동 당일 마중을 나가는데, 갑자기 신데렐라의 눈이 빨갛게 변했다. 아무도 모르는 사이 신데렐라가 랩쳐의 침식에 당한 것이다. 동료를 무자비하게 공격하는 신데렐라에게 언령을 사용해 멈추는 것엔 성공했지만, 생각보다 더 빠르게 언령을 풀어버린 신데렐라에게 제압된다. 이때 묘사에 따르면, 언령을 사용하지 못하게 턱을 파괴했다고 나온다. 스토리 일러스트로 이 장면을 표현했으니 확인하자. 피 묻은 신데렐라의 얼굴이 섬뜩해지는 순간이다.
이렇게 리타이어 한 뒤 에이브의 노력으로 어렵사리 재수복에 성공했다. 이젠 아나키오르라고 불리게 된 신데렐라를 막기 위해 다시 한번 레드 슈즈, 헨젤, 그레텔과 함께 2차전에 돌입했다. 신데렐라에게 불리한 근접전으로 유도해 싸움을 이어나갔으나, 갑자기 끼어든 인류군의 행동으로 작전이 실패하고 만다. 그렇게 다시 헤어지고 얼마의 시간이 흐른 뒤, 침식에 풀려난 신데렐라를 다시 만난다.
에이브에게 신데렐라의 침식이 풀렸다는 걸 먼저 들었지만, 과거의 사건으로 리틀 머메이드는 의도치 않게 거리를 뒀다. 이에 당황하는 신데렐라에게 '아주 조금만 시간을 줘'라며, 어렵사리 입을 열었다. 갑자기 가라앉은 분위기에 레드 슈즈가 나서 신데렐라와 단둘이 이야기를 나누겠다고 자리를 피했다. 그리고 얼마 뒤 신데렐라와 레드 슈즈가 들어간 방에서 굉음이 울려 퍼졌다. 이에 다급히 들어간 리틀 머메이드 일행의 눈앞엔 다리가 잘리고, 가슴에 구멍이 난 레드 슈즈와 그 앞에 선 신데렐라가 있었다.
사실 신데렐라의 침식은 모두 레드 슈즈가 꾸민 일이었다. 이를 당당히 밝힌 레드 슈즈를 보고 분노한 신데렐라가 처분한 상황이었으나, 리틀 머메이드와 스쿼드 동료들은 옆에서 들은 게 아니라 알 수가 없었다. 당장 눈앞에 펼쳐진 상황을 토대로 판단할 수밖에 없었던 리틀 머메이드는 신데렐라의 해명을 믿지 않았다. 이에 크게 실망한 신데렐라는 '왜 나한테 괜찮냐는 말을 한마디도 안 해줘?'라는 하소연을 한 뒤 그자리에서 떠났다. 이 말에 큰 충격을 받은 리틀 머메이드는 아무 말도 하지 못했다. 왜냐하면, 자기는 실제로 그런 말을 하지 않았으니까.
해당 사건 후 리틀 머메이드 일행은 인류연합군에 억류된다. 신데렐라의 케이스 때문에 혹여 리틀 머메이드들도 침식된 게 아니냐는 우려 때문이었다. 이때 오스왈드가 레드 슈즈가 흑막이라는 증거를 가져와 공유했고, 일행은 신데렐라를 오해했다는 사실을 깨달았다. 마침, 오스왈드는 신데렐라를 말살하라는 임무를 맡았다. 내막을 아는 인물들은 즉시 신데렐라를 찾아갔고, 오해를 풀게 된다. 이 과정은 눈물 없이 볼 수 없는 장면이니, 아카이브 OLD TALES 스토리를 꼭 시청하자.
그렇게 다시 모인 2세대 페어리 테일들은 다시 힘을 모아 궤도 엘리베이터를 공격했다. 이때 리틀 머메이드의 언령이 가진 힘이 다시 드러나는데, 물거품을 광범위로 뿌려 랩쳐들의 움직임을 모두 멈췄다. 그리고 이어지는 헨젤,그레텔과 신데렐라의 공격으로 랩쳐들을 휩쓸었다. 그렇게 갓데스도 들어가지 못한 궤도 엘리베이터에 들어온 일행은 우주를 바라보던 와중 갑자기 주변의 온도가 올라가는 걸 느꼈다. 이때 리틀 머메이드가 이런 상황에서 해선 안 될 말을 내뱉고 만다. '나쁜 예감이 들어'. 그 직후 리틀 머메이드의 시야는 붉게 물들었다.
100년이 넘는 세월, 홀로 싸운 승리의 여신
포비스트 레비아탄의 첫 번째 친구
갑작스러운 공격을 받은 리틀 머메이드는 그대로 궤도 엘리베이터에서 지상으로 떨어졌다. 다행히 물거품으로 충격을 막아 무사했다. 이후 리틀 머메이드는 떨어진 동료들을 찾기 위해 수십 년 동안 지상을 떠돌아다녔다. 그러나 별다른 성과가 없었고, 서서히 몸과 마음이 마모되어 지쳐가기 시작했다. 이윽고 물거품을 사용해 바다를 표류하다 정신을 잃고 외딴 바닷가에 도달했다.
얼마 뒤 누군가의 말소리를 듣고 리틀 머메이드는 외딴 동굴에서 눈을 떴다. 그리곤 검은 액체를 뒤집어쓴 니케를 마주했다. 지상에서 처음 사귄 친구 '레비아탄'과의 첫 만남이었다. 물론, 첫 만남부터 헬레틱이라고 허세를 부리는 레비아탄을 물거품으로 공격하는 해프닝이 있었다. 다행히 오해가 풀려 아무도 다치지 않았다.
해프닝이 지나갔지만, 둘은 급속도로 친해졌다. 인식표의 'LEV-20765'를 따와 레비라는 이름을 붙여준 것도 리틀 머메이드였다. 너무 대충 지었다는 레비아탄의 말에 상처를 입었지만 말이다. 심신이 지친 상태였던 리틀 머메이드는 홀로 사는 레비아탄이 안쓰러워서 한 달간 같이 지내기로 했다. 그사이 레비아탄의 몸에서 나오는 검은 액체가 물거품과 같은 액체 금속이란 사실을 깨닫곤, 이를 다루는 기술을 레비아탄에게 전수했다. 레비아탄이 현재 이 기술을 어떻게 사용하는 지 알게 된다면, 리틀 머메이드의 반응이 어떨 지 궁금하다.

70년 만에 만난 새로운 친구들
그렇게 글러트니에게 먹힌 리틀 머메이드는 다행히 물거품 능력으로 생존에 성공했다. 이쯤 되면 물거품이나 리틀 머메이드를 만든 에이브가 얼마나 말도 안 되는 천재였는지 실감이 난다. 여튼 글러트니의 소화액이 물거품을 없애지 못한다는 점에 착안해 방어막을 만들어 은신처를 구축했다. 살아남은 것 까진 좋았으나, 아무리 찾아봐도 글러트니에서 탈출할 방법이 보이지 않았다.
결국 혼자 있는 공간에서 리틀 머메이드는 동료들의 모습을 물거품으로 만들거나, 보드게임을 만들어 봤지만, 고독감은 사라지지 않았다. 그렇게 한달이 지나가고, 글러트니의 숨구멍을 통해 물거품을 밖으로 내보낼 방법을 찾아냈다. 이를 이용해 밖으로 물거품을 이용해 메시지를 남기기 시작했다. 리틀 머메이드는 이 물거품에 2가지 명령을 입력했다. 첫 번째, 친구들에게 자신이 글러트니 안에 있다는 걸 알리는 것. 두 번째, 반년 동안 친구들을 찾지 못하면, 산산이 부서져 날아가 물거품 구름이 될 것이다. 그리고 이것이 현재에 이르러 큰 역할로 자리 잡는다.
그리고 다시 세월이 지나 갑작스러운 손님 3명을 맞이했다. 지상을 탐색하던 미하라와 유니, 그 뒤를 따라가던 모리였다. 오랜만에 만난 이들을 통해 이미 70년이 흘렀다는 사실을 알게 됐고, 그녀들을 밖으로 내보낼 준비를 하기 시작했다. 이 과정에서 일행들에게 글러트니에게 먹혔다는 사실을 의도적으로 숨긴다. 나쁜 의미가 아니라 패닉에 빠질까 우려해서 한 행동이었다. 이 거짓말은 얼마 안 있어 부메랑으로 돌아온다. 거짓말을 했다며, 날뛰던 모리로 인해 콜링 시그널이 발동되고, 기껏 숨겼던 AA필러까지 글러트니에게 들키고 만다.
어찌어찌 모리를 진정시켰지만, 이미 때는 늦었다. 은신처와 AA필러의 존재를 은폐하던 노력이 수포로 돌아갔고, 사방에서 랩쳐들이 쳐들어오기 시작했다. 레비아탄 이후 다시 사귄 친구들을 위험에 빠트릴 수 없었던 리틀 머메이드는 또다시 거짓말을 해 미하라, 유니, 모리를 글러트니의 밖으로 내보냈다. 멀어지는 와중 자신의 이름을 울부짖는 모리를 뒤로하고, 자신의 모티브인 인어 공주처럼 사라질 각오를 다진채 마지막 싸움을 준비했다.
다시 만난 동료, 그리고 닥쳐온 위기
과거 자신을 이끌어줬던 신데렐라를 기억하며, 부끄럽지 않은 승리의 여신이 되겠다는 다짐을 마친 리틀 머메이드. 그런데 갑자기 글러트니가 요동치기 시작했다. 자신을 구하겠다는 일념으로 돌아온 미하라와 유니, 모리가 글러트니를 공격하고 있던 것이다. 그렇게 다시 글러트니 속으로 뛰어든 모리는 리틀 머메이드에게 함께 밖으로 탈출하자고 말했다. 보통 이러면 눈물을 흘리며 "YES"라고 할 텐데, 리틀 머메이드는 "NO"라고 거절한다. 모리 입장에선 복장이 뒤집어질 소리였다.
하지만, 모리의 '함께 살아서 해피엔딩을 맞이하자'라는 설득에 마음을 바꿨다. 그렇게 시작된 글러트니 레이드, 미하라가 공수한 지상의 크리스탈 결정과 AA 필러의 에너지를 이용해 글러트니를 쓰러트렸다. 여기서 밝혀진 충격적인 진실이 드러난다. 사실 리틀 머메이드가 먹힌 부분은 본체가 아니라 목구멍에 지나지 않았다. 사실상 본체를 쓰러트린 게 아닌 입 일부를 파괴한 것 뿐이다. 낙담하는 것도 잠시, 70년 만에 올라온 지상을 본 리틀 머메이드는 일행에게 감사를 표하며, 기쁨의 눈물을 흘렸다. 여기에 공명하듯 울음을 터트린 모리는 덤이다. 일러스트가 참 귀여우니 꼭 감상하자.
