As it approaches its 20th anniversary, Guild Wars is set to receive a substantial free remaster update.

NCSoft announced on the 18th (local time) that, to commemorate two decades of Guild Wars, they are rolling out a massive modernization effort dubbed 'Guild Wars Reforged'. Guild Wars is an MMORPG that launched in 2005, developed by NCSoft's subsidiary, ArenaNet.

The 'Guild Wars Reforged' update is scheduled for release on December 3, a project realized in collaboration with '2weeks', a small project team formed in 2024 by former ArenaNet developers. The team is composed of veterans who each contributed over 14 years to the development of the original Guild Wars.

The update bundles the original trilogy of campaigns into a single, cohesive experience. Players can enjoy the expansive narrative, diverse quests, and various missions with improved graphics, audio, UI, and input systems. For existing players, this is a free update, while newcomers can purchase a new package that consolidates all previous expansions.

On the quality-of-life front, the series is adding XInput-based controller support for the first time. The developers also announced plans to obtain Steam Deck verification, along with improvements such as high-resolution display support, HD skill icons, and scalable text sizes. With a newly built ambient audio system, directional guidance, and quest tracking, the update aims to lower the barrier to entry for new players.

Meanwhile, an NCSoft representative stated, "As Guild Wars was never serviced in Korea, the Reforged version will not include support for the Korean language either."
