NHN announced on the 19th that its zombie apocalypse title 'DARKEST DAYS' has undergone a comprehensive overhaul of its gear collection and enhancement systems.

'DARKEST DAYS' is an open-world PC and mobile shooting RPG developed and serviced by NHN. This update aims to bolster progression mechanics, following a significant improvement to early-game experiences, including 'Sand Creek', during the November update.

The headline change is the complete removal of the 'Lucky Box'. Players can no longer rely on these crates to secure high-tier gear; instead, the game now shifts focus entirely to farming and crafting. To make this transition easier to swallow, drop rates for various equipment and crafting materials have been significantly increased.

The enhancement system has also seen a major shake-up. You no longer have to worry about your equipment level dropping upon failed upgrades. Furthermore, they have introduced an 'Enhancement Point' system, which guarantees a 100% success rate once you reach a certain number of failures. The upgrade cap has been expanded from 9 to 18 stages, with existing items receiving retroactive adjustments.

A new 'calibration' system allows players to tweak the additional stats on their gear. In 'DARKEST DAYS', equipment receives specific prefixes based on these stats, and players can now use calibration tools to swap them out. You can snag these tools with a bit of luck when dismantling SSR-grade gear.

Melee combat has also been given a bit more utility with the addition of a secondary weapon slot. By equipping a melee weapon here, players can perform quick strikes even while firing, using the 'F' key (or dedicated touch controls on mobile).

Beyond these structural changes, 'DARKEST DAYS' has rolled out a suite of quality-of-life improvements, including: ▲A general rebalancing of firearms, including pistols, ▲The addition of skill presets, ▲Adjustments to passive skill effects, ▲An expanded collection log with better acquisition bonuses, ▲Revised community affinity effects, ▲Improved equipment tooltip readability, and ▲A new feature to share gear information in the chat window.

To keep things fresh, a new skin system and a winter-themed event have arrived. You can now customise five parts of your character—hat, accessories, tops, bottoms, and bags—including a festive Santa outfit. Your pets are getting in on the holiday spirit with seasonal costumes, and players can hunt zombies to collect 'Christmas Cookies' to trade for various event rewards.
