Stardew Valley, a perennial favorite in the farming simulation genre, has seen a significant surge in interest recently. Following the start of the Steam Winter Sale on the 19th, its player count has been on an upward trajectory, hitting 123,297 concurrent players on the 21st—its highest record in the last two months. Compared to the 80,000 to 90,000 range seen in November, this is a clear increase, helping the game secure a spot in the top 20 daily peak concurrent players.

The renewed attention on this long-running farming sim can be attributed to two main factors. First, the 40% discount during the Steam Winter Sale has successfully driven an influx of new users who were previously hesitant to purchase the game.

The second factor is the anticipation for the next update. Developer Eric Barone announced in August that he would be releasing the 1.7 update, capturing the attention of fans. On December 17, when asked by a fan on X (formerly Twitter) about what to expect in the next update, Barone replied, "I plan to add more character and social elements, and continue the tradition of adding a new farm type. There's more, but I can't say it all yet," which further fueled excitement.

If a new farm type is added as teased by Barone, it will provide fresh content even for veteran players. It appears that the developer's hints at a "big update" have successfully reignited overall interest in Stardew Valley.

Elsewhere in the top 20, Bongo Cat dropped in rankings, while Apex Legends, Path of Exile 2, and Rust each climbed one spot. Meanwhile, GTA 5 Legacy reached 136,992 players, closely trailing GTA 5 Enhanced. Finally, with Stardew Valley entering the top 20, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has dropped out of the rankings.

In the global top 10 best-selling games, EA Sports FC 26 stood out by taking 4th place, driven by its largest discount to date at 60% off. Other major titles such as Arc Raiders, Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 also maintained top positions. Path of Exile 2 also remains noteworthy for firmly holding 8th place amidst the sea of discounted games.
