This incident highlights the clear boundary between the monetization of derivative works and the protection of intellectual property, as the developer intervened to stop the modder's forced commercial distribution.

The mod in question was provided exclusively to users who paid a monthly subscription fee of approximately $10 via Patreon. CDPR's fan content guidelines strictly prohibit the commercial use of user-generated content, specifically forbidding the requirement of payment or hiding content behind a paywall. However, the company does allow for voluntary, non-compulsory donations.

The creator, Luke Ross, expressed opposition to this action. He stated that he had direct discussions with CDPR's legal team and the VP of business development but failed to reach an agreement. Ross criticized the move as hypocritical 'corporate logic,' arguing that it is unreasonable for the developer to block third-party solutions when they have no plans to release an official VR mode.
