Heavy and Satisfying Combat, 'Game of Thrones: Kingsroad' CBT Hands-on
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, based on the HBO drama series, successfully wrapped up its Closed Beta Test (CBT) on Steam, which ran from April 17th to 24th. Rumours were swirling that this version might just be a lazy reskin of the North American build, with nothing more than a few tweaks to its monetization and numbers. But,as I discovered after spending a week in Westeros, the reality is far more compelling. The game has evolved beyond simple balance adjustments into something genuinely distinct. Here is my breakdown of the core changes and the allure that defines this version of Kingsroad.
The polarising North American build
The manual combat also earned its fair share of praise. Forget the flashy, magical fireworks of generic fantasy RPGs; this was about the brutal, grounded clatter of steel against plate armour. With parries and combos, it offered a visceral sense of impact that players really dug into.
However, the endgame became a slog of repetitive grinding, and the business model left a sour taste in many mouths, effectively dulling the shine of its best asset: the story. Furthermore, the UI—clearly designed with mobile in mind—felt rather clunky for the North American audience.
My own experience during the late-game stages aligned perfectly with these criticisms. Naturally, I kept a close eye on the updates planned for the upcoming Asian launch, and this CBT finally gave us a glimpse of those changes in action.

A natural evolution in storytelling
The true strength of an IP-based game lies in letting you walk among iconic characters. In the North American version, the language barrier meant that unless you were fluent, the nuance of the lore was often lost in translation. It was a friction point that anyone without local expertise would find grating.
Naturally, the Korean CBT provided full localization. Without the translation hurdle, the narrative flow felt far more organic, making it much easier to digest the expansive lore and the eccentricities of the cast.

The enhanced cutscenes and quest dialogues really pull you into the world. You can actually feel the grit of the Night's Watch at Castle Black, and the tyrannical shadow of House Bolton in the North feels appropriately oppressive. These additions, which weren't in the North American version, significantly flesh out the atmosphere.
The real kicker, however, is the quest branching. This isn't just a minor dialogue shuffle; your choices in the CBT can genuinely seal the fate of side NPCs. It is a bold, brutal touch that captures the unforgiving nature of the Game of Thrones universe and serves as a vital tool for immersion.
Visually, the game has turned the dial up as well. Swearing and blood are the status quo, and the 'Powerful Strike' feature during combat now includes limb-severing animations that are as gory as they are unflinching. It is not just for the sake of shock value, either. These gruesome details serve as an excellent vehicle to convey the cold, blood-soaked reality of the setting, pulling you deeper into the experience.

Combat gets a flashy upgrade with weapon swapping
The parry system, the darling of the North American version, remains intact. You can gauge parry windows by the colour of the effects on enemy attacks, while unblockable strikes must be dodged. With reduced server latency, the parry window felt much more generous, allowing even those with less-than-stellar reflexes to feel the weight of every successful counter.Throw in 'Ambush' attacks from behind and the 'Powerful Strike' triggered when an enemy is staggered, and you have a combat loop that feels well-seasoned.

I was also pleased to see the pain points addressed. Previously, you were restricted to three skills, which felt limiting. Even with an artifact skill, the long cooldowns meant you were often stuck in a repetitive cycle of basic attacks.
To fix this, the CBT introduced a weapon-swapping system. Each class can toggle between two weapons at will, each with up to three slots for skills. You can also equip different artifacts to each weapon to trigger unique effects or build up a gauge for a weapon-swap skill. Being able to cycle through up to nine skills made combat feel significantly more dynamic and visually impressive.

Less focus on the wallet
While the field content structure—such as 'Abandoned Ruins' puzzles, 'Smoky Huts' for culling wildlings, and 'Weirwood Memories'—remained largely similar to the North American version, the rewards have been adjusted. It is unclear if these reward structures are final for the launch, though.
For co-op, we only got to test the 'Altar of Memories.' It is a four-player boss raid that feels quite standard for the genre. A welcome addition is the automatic AI party-filling system for when matching takes too long—a feature the North American players were desperate for. It is a shame, however, that the 'Altar of the Abyss' raid shown in the showcase wasn't available.

The new collection content is a mixed bag. Collecting 'Lost Letters,' 'Ancient Books,' and 'Rare Ores' for the 'Scholar’s Archive' is a nice diversion, but it feels a bit disconnected from the rest of the world. Given how well the rest of the game captures the IP, this inconsistency stands out a bit more than it should.
Finally, the monetization model has seen a major shift from the North American version. They promised in the showcase that all accessories previously locked behind gacha would be available through gameplay, and the CBT confirmed this. Furthermore, the subscription offerings were focused on quality-of-life, with no glaring 'Pay to Win' elements in sight.

A promising road ahead for Kingsroad
All in all, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a title that fans of the series should welcome with open arms. It captures the vast scale of the lore and pairs it with high-quality production. Just the chance to roam the North, visiting Castle Black and Winterfell to bump into the likes of Jon Snow, is enough to justify the price of admission. The original narrative threads are just the icing on the cake.
Even for those not steeped in the lore, there is plenty to enjoy. The combat is meaty, the parries are satisfying, and the field and co-op activities offer a solid, if familiar, gameplay loop. The fact that it all integrates so seamlessly into the world makes it a fresh experience. Even if you are a newcomer, the game does a fine job of setting the stage for you.
The improvements over the North American build are genuinely exciting. Combat is more dynamic, the monetization is far friendlier, and the narrative focus is sharper than ever. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad launches on PC on May 14th, with the full release—including mobile support—confirmed for May 21st. If you are looking for something with a bit of weight and a lot of bite, keep an eye on those dates.
