Naturally, this comes with a fresh batch of content, including the 'Chronicles' system. It is a lore-heavy feature designed to document your protagonist's journey while offering glimpses into the monumental events shaking Westeros. Today, we have curated a guide on where to find the scattered reading materials required to unlock these entries.

Chronicles Categories and Unlocking Requirements

The Chronicles are split into two primary buckets: 'My Story', which tracks your character's personal exploits, and 'Westeros', which focuses on the continent's shifting politics. 'My Story' unlocks naturally as you progress through the main quest. However, the 'Westeros' section demands a bit more detective work; you will need to hunt down and read specific lore items scattered throughout the world to unlock these entries.

As of the August 19 update, you will need to collect 17 specific reading materials to complete the Chronicles. Check the list below for their locations. If you are looking to catch up on the lore quickly, feel free to read on—but be warned, there are spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution if you prefer to discover things in-game.

The Arrival of the White Walkers

The Night's Watch has a simple rule: desertion is met with immediate execution. Yet, many have tried to flee, including a ranger named Will. As a former hunter, Will was supposedly unmatched in stealth, but even that could not save the ranger.

While scouting the forests beyond the Wall, Will encountered the White Walkers. Will attempted to desert the Night's Watch to spread the warning, only to be captured and executed. At the time, most dismissed the ranger's story as nothing more than a nursery rhyme.

The Execution of Ned Stark

Eddard 'Ned' Stark is painted as a man of rigid principles—perhaps a bit inflexible, but undoubtedly upright. At the request of the King and close friend, Robert Baratheon, Ned Stark took on the role of Hand of the King. Ned Stark spent the time attempting to curb the excesses of Robert Baratheon and manage the state. While investigating the death of the previous Hand, Jon Arryn, Ned Stark uncovered a dark secret regarding Queen Cersei Lannister.

When the King suddenly passed and the scramble for succession began, Ned Stark threw support behind Stannis Baratheon, purely because Stannis Baratheon was the rightful heir. It is a testament to Ned Stark's unwavering principles. Unfortunately, betrayed by those around the Hand, Ned Stark met a grim end, executed by the newly crowned Joffrey Baratheon.

The War of the Five Kings

Following the death of King Robert Baratheon, the War of the Five Kings erupted over succession and regional independence. The kings in question were Joffrey Baratheon, Robb Stark, Stannis Baratheon, Renly Baratheon, and Balon Greyjoy. Each pushed their own claim to the throne, dragging the entire continent of Westeros into the flames of war.

Battle of the Blackwater

The Battle of the Blackwater was the largest conflict of the war. It kicked off according to Tyrion Lannister's plan, with wildfire incinerating the fleet. Wildfire, as known in the world of Game of Thrones, is a highly volatile substance strictly managed by the Alchemists. Used primarily as a bomb, it is infamous for burning with a distinct green flame.

Even after the vanguard fleet was decimated by wildfire, Stannis Baratheon pushed for a landing. The assault nearly brought King's Landing to its knees, but the arrival of Tywin Lannister's reinforcements forced a retreat. This battle, along with the later Red Wedding, effectively sealed the Lannister victory in the War of the Five Kings.

The Red Wedding

During the war, the Starks and Freys were meant to be allies through marriage, but the alliance crumbled when Robb Stark broke his engagement. Robb Stark tried to mend the bridge by having an uncle, Edmure Tully, marry into the Frey family, but the head of the house, Walder Frey, had already made other plans.

The wedding was grand, but it turned into a slaughterhouse when Frey soldiers disguised as musicians massacred the Starks and their guests. It remains one of the most shocking moments for fans of the original work.

In Westeros, the 'Guest Right' dictates that a host must not harm a guest, and vice versa. The Red Wedding was a flagrant violation of this sacred custom, earning the Frey family lasting contempt across the continent. Regardless, the event marked the collapse of House Stark, allowing House Bolton to rise as the Wardens of the North. For the record, the protagonist's sibling also perishes in this event.

Samwell Kills a White Walker

Samwell Tarly, once an aspiring maester, joined the Night's Watch under pressure from family. Coming from a noble line, Samwell Tarly was an outlier. Lacking martial prowess, Samwell Tarly endured mockery from other brothers in the Watch.

Samwell Tarly accompanied the Lord Commander Jeor Mormont on the 'Great Ranging' beyond the Wall. By chance, Samwell Tarly killed a White Walker with a dragonglass blade, earning the nickname 'Sam the Slayer'. This feat eventually leads the protagonist to discover the weakness of the White Walkers and secure dragonglass from Stannis Baratheon.

The Purple Wedding

Joffrey Baratheon married Margaery Tyrell to secure the South and the support of House Tyrell. During the wedding feast, a drunken Joffrey Baratheon insulted Tyrion Lannister before being poisoned to death. This incident ripples through the Chronicles, impacting 'Sansa's Escape' and 'Tyrion's Trial'.

Sansa's Escape

Though held as a hostage, Sansa Stark was technically the rightful heir to the North. Sensing this, House Tyrell attempted to arrange a marriage with Willas Tyrell, but Tywin Lannister intervened, forcing Sansa Stark to marry Tyrion Lannister instead.

Forced to marry into the house that destroyed the family, Sansa Stark fell into despair. However, during the chaos following the poisoning of Joffrey Baratheon, Sansa Stark fled King's Landing. Tyrion's Trial

Framed for the murder of Joffrey Baratheon, Tyrion Lannister was initially slated to be sent to the Night's Watch. However, seeing a beloved companion, Shae, give false testimony in court, a furious Tyrion Lannister demanded a Trial by Combat. It is a trial where the accused or a champion fights, under the belief that the gods grant victory to the righteous.

The Crown's champion was Gregor Clegane, known as The Mountain. Tyrion Lannister chose Oberyn Martell as a champion. Oberyn Martell had no reason to refuse, given Gregor Clegane had murdered a sister, Elia Martell.

In the duel, Oberyn Martell pushed the opponent to the brink with an elegant spear technique, successfully extracting a confession. However, in a moment of hubris, Oberyn Martell was countered by Gregor Clegane and killed, losing the trial. Consequently, Tyrion Lannister was found guilty.

For reference, Oberyn Martell had several illegitimate daughters known as the 'Sand Snakes'. One of them, Nymeria Sand, appears during a quest in Oldtown.

The Advance of the Wildlings

While a civil war raged south of the Wall, the Wildlings began their advance from the North. Led by the King-Beyond-the-Wall, Mance Rayder, the Wildling host began crossing the Wall. Vanguards had already begun raiding various parts of the North.

In truth, they were fleeing the threat of the White Walkers. Of course, since their actions threaten the North, the Night's Watch has no intention of letting them through.
