Reports have emerged that Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently preparing a reboot of the 'Killzone' series, once a prominent PlayStation FPS franchise.

Developed by Guerrilla Games, 'Killzone' was heralded upon release as Sony's answer to Microsoft's 'Halo' series. However, following the runaway success of 'Horizon Zero Dawn' in 2017, Guerrilla Games shifted its focus entirely to the 'Horizon' franchise. News of new 'Killzone' entries gradually dried up, and the series has effectively been on ice since the 2013 launch of 'Killzone Shadow Fall'. Despite this prolonged slumber, the franchise still commands a fiercely loyal fanbase, one that has continuously clamoured for a triumphant return.

According to an exclusive report by overseas gaming outlet MP1st on August 7, Sony is reportedly pushing forward with a 'Killzone' reboot. Rumour has it that original developer Guerrilla Games will helm the project, potentially teaming up with People Can Fly, the studio behind 'Bulletstorm' and 'Outriders', for co-development. The report suggests that the 'Killzone' project could take the form of a remake or a high-definition remaster of a past entry. While it remains unclear precisely which title is getting the reboot treatment, the 2004 PlayStation 2 original 'Killzone' is currently being floated as the most likely candidate.

Meanwhile, Guerrilla Games also has irons in the fire, including the multiplayer 'Horizon' spin-off 'Horizon Hunters Assemble'. According to previous MP1st reports, the studio is expected to transition into full-scale work on the 'Killzone' reboot once 'Horizon Hunters Assemble' wraps up development. In addition, internal sources whisper that a small skunkworks team has already been deployed to work on the next-generation 'Horizon' (tentatively titled Horizon 3) series.
