Look, let's be honest, roguelike RPG Chaos Zero Nightmare (hereafter CZN), serviced by Smilegate and developed by Super Creative, has officially rolled out its 1st anniversary update alongside a fresh season dubbed "Promise Engraved on the Snow" on October 21st. This latest drop marks the fifth season of the seasonal content "Galactic Disaster," bringing a brand-new story arc and the seasonal combatant "Rosweisse" into the mix.

The opening chapter of the newly minted Season 5 follows the captain and company—stranded due to an unidentifiable catastrophe—as they stumble upon a fresh Chaos zone called the "Celestial Barrier." Players will cross paths with new faces like Rosweisse, an apostle of the Goddess of Cycle "Kirken," while unravelling secrets intertwined with yet another deity, "Dialos." Within the Celestial Barrier, a supply shop opens its doors, letting players trade special currency earned through gameplay for characters and progression materials.

Rosweisse arrives as a Justice-attribute striker. Built around the lore of acting in the stead of the Goddess of Cycle's will, the design packs meticulous details inspired by the five traditional Korean colors representing the principles of Yin and Yang, alongside the evil-warding sword known as Saingeom. Rosweisse's core gimmick revolves around the "Flickering Sword" card, split into "Light" and "Dark" variants sitting at opposite ends of the hand, triggering various interactions depending on which other cards get played. Meet specific conditions, and the cards merge into a single, devastating skill. Director Kim's past—wait, let us rephrase that: Rosweisse's backstory can be explored in the newly opened "Trauma Code" content.

This 1st anniversary update also introduces "Card Skins," a fresh system allowing players to swap out combatant card illustrations. Meanwhile, the costume system gains a brand-new "Special" tier, altering all of the combatant's motions, unique cards, and dozens of exclusive voice lines. Partners equipped to combatants now feature a "Exploration Passive" system to boost overall utility. Four-star partners pack two buff effects, while five-star partners boast three, granting party-wide benefits when deploying into Chaos zones. On top of that, a "Divine Inspiration Selection Grant" feature has been added, allowing players to imbue saved data edits with the specific divine "Inspiration" of their choice.

To celebrate the 1st anniversary, Smilegate is running the "Nightmare Festival" event until December 2nd. Throughout the event window, the publisher hands out 10 free rescue chances daily, adding up to a total of 70 draws, alongside login rewards including a 5-star combatant and partner selector plus 1,600 Crystals. Daily check-ins and in-game events will also shower players with character summon currencies and special sticker items.

Furthermore, from October 21st to December 23rd, a mini-game titled "Nightmare Dream Park" opens its virtual gates. Players must place and upgrade facilities within the dream park to boost visiting combatants' satisfaction ratings and rake in profits. In what the publisher calls a heartwarming initiative, this mini-game ties into the Smilegate Hope Studio donation platform to run a charity campaign supporting underprivileged children.
