The latest entry in the 'Shaolin vs Wutang' fighting game series, which pays homage to the golden age of Hong Kong martial arts cinema from the 1960s to the 1990s, has finally been revealed.

Indie developer J.Bowman recently launched the Steam page for 'Shaolin vs Wutang Legends,' confirming plans for an Early Access release. Having already seen two previous iterations, the 'Shaolin vs Wutang' series remains a love letter to the Hong Kong action films that dominated Asian cinema for decades.

'Shaolin vs Wutang Legends' is a casual fighting game that focuses on both unarmed combat and weapon-based skirmishes. You can expect authentic combat sounds and dynamic offensive and defensive manoeuvres that deliver a grounded sense of impact. By utilising licensed soundtracks from iconic kung fu films and featuring over 30 distinct stages, the developer aims to recreate the classic martial arts experience. Rather than opting for flashy, modern effects, J.Bowman focuses on realistically depicting the fighting choreography found in classic cinema.

This instalment promises to be the largest in the series, boasting 40 unique martial arts styles and characters. Players will find references to legends like Jackie Chan’s 'Drunken Master,' Bruce Lee’s 'Fist of Fury' and 'Enter the Dragon,' as well as Jet Li’s 'Once Upon a Time in China.' The game also features characters inspired by various fighting styles such as boxing and capoeira. Notably, the game pays tribute to the Korean influence on Hong Kong cinema; the latest trailer showcases Korean stages, practitioners of Tang Soo Do, and even characters modelled after Hwang Jang-lee—the legendary actor known for his roles in 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow' and 'Drunken Master.'

One of the standout features is the accessibility of the controls. J.Bowman has minimised complex command inputs, allowing players to recreate cinematic action sequences with ease. Regarding the design philosophy, J.Bowman stated, "This game is crafted for casual fans rather than hardcore fighting game enthusiasts." The developer added, "It is not intended to compete with high-budget fighting titles. The goal is to evoke nostalgia for the golden age of kung fu movies and provide a deeply satisfying experience."

The release date for 'Shaolin vs Wutang Legends' is currently unconfirmed, though an Early Access launch is expected in the near future.
