Greg 'Ghostcrawler' Street, a name synonymous with World of Warcraft, has seen his venture 'Fantastic Pixel Castle'—founded in partnership with NetEase—collapse just two years after its inception.

Street confirmed the news via LinkedIn on the 4th. "Fantastic Pixel Castle will close its doors on 17 November," he wrote. While he mused that securing further funding remains a possibility, it hinges entirely on how many staff remain. "My priority is helping our developers find new roles, whether that's at an indie studio, a 'Fantastic Pixel Castle 2.0', or other stellar tech and gaming firms."

The collaboration between the legendary 'Ghostcrawler' and NetEase Games made headlines back in November 2023. With his pedigree in MMO design, the announcement of a new AAA fantasy project, codenamed 'Ghost', had garnered significant attention from gamers worldwide.

However, the situation shifted rapidly this September when Street announced his departure from Fantastic Pixel Castle. The partnership between the studio and NetEase Games had dissolved, and the studio spent the following months attempting to find new publishers or investors. Street had noted at the time that without a new publisher, the studio would likely close.

Two months later, Street officially confirmed the closure, bringing the two-year journey to an end. He stated, "To our playtesters and supporters, thank you. To those who reached out to offer connections or investment, I’m truly grateful. And to the folks at NetEase who took a chance on us, thank you for the opportunity."

Meanwhile, due to the global economic downturn and intensifying competition in the gaming market, an increasing number of new projects are being canceled or studios are undergoing restructuring. Internationally, major companies including Microsoft (following its acquisition of Activision), Ubisoft, EA, and Amazon have conducted layoffs. Domestically, the game 'Goddess Order' saw its development halted just one month after launch due to the studio's financial difficulties, and Dizard, the developer behind 'Princess Maker: Resplendent' and 'Asura Jang', has also carried out large-scale restructuring.
