Nintendo's Rhythm Heaven series has long enjoyed a cult following in Korea. Since its official arrival in 2008, its quirky charm and infectious beats have captured hearts everywhere. While fans have been left hanging for nearly a decade since Rhythm Heaven Megamix, there is hope on the horizon with the upcoming Rhythm Heaven Miracle Stars set for next year.

Stepping into that rhythmic void on the 10th is a delightful newcomer: Bits & Bops. It is a collection of rhythm-based mini-games set in a shop run by a charming dog named 'Bob', inviting players to drop by and test their sense of timing.

Bits & Bops packs over 16 distinct rhythm mini-games. Your initiation begins with 'Snappy Shot', where you must capture a seal bouncing a ball at the perfect moment. The game starts with a tutorial, guiding you to hit the beat three times; fail this, and the music won't even kick into full gear.

While the animations serve as visual cues, you simply cannot rely on your eyes alone. In 'Snappy Shot', for instance, the shutter-happy cat is a master of distraction—jumping in for a swim, swapping places with the seal, or even falling from the sky to plant a kiss on the poor creature instead of the ball.

The game’s aesthetic is a masterclass in 'cute chaos'. In 'Rock, Paper, Scissors Duel', you’ll see human hands pulling stunts like holding up a paper with a rock drawn on it, donning scissor-gloves, or simply opting for a polite handshake. The animal-themed stages feature ants and canaries throwing festivals, turning every distraction into a charming highlight.

The controls are delightfully simple, sticking to one or two buttons. Early stages test your reflexes with single taps or quick double-taps. Later levels introduce more complexity; in 'Beebot & Dancing Girls', you'll be tapping one button for rhythmic dance moves and holding another for a second to pull off a smooth breakdancing scratch.

Once you clear four mini-games, you unlock the 'Mixtape'—a grand, remixed medley of those stages. These serve as the game’s boss levels, demanding tighter timing. Clearing a 'Jungle Mixtape' is a tough challenge, but the sense of accomplishment is well worth the effort.

Performance is graded as 'Amazing', 'Cool', or 'Try Again'. A high score in 'Snappy Shot' even rewards you with a cheeky message: 'You’ve captured a memory to last a lifetime!' Rewards come in the form of 'Souvenirs'. If you fail to meet the accuracy threshold, you get a 'Try Again' prompt, meaning no trinkets and the next stage remains locked.

You can display these souvenirs in the Bits & Bops shop. There is a small room on the left where you can customise your desktop, tinker with settings, or proudly hang your earned badges. And, of course, you can pester Bob, the adorable dog-person running the shop, for as long as your heart desires.

As of the 22nd, Bits & Bops holds a 'Very Positive' rating on Steam (92% positive). Players are praising it for being 'more approachable than Rhythm Heaven,' noting that 'despite the smaller volume, the music and animation quality are top-tier.' While some have jokingly threatened to throw their tea cups in frustration at the harder stages, the consensus is that it is an addictive, creative gem.
