Jason Momoa, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Aquaman, is keeping his streak with game-based films alive. Following his appearance in the Minecraft movie released last year, he has been cast in the leading role for the upcoming 'Helldivers' film.

Sony Pictures has announced that 'Helldivers' is slated for release on 10 November 2027, with Momoa taking the lead. While Momoa rose to stardom through Game of Thrones, his stint with Warner Bros.' 'Aquaman' was a bit of a rough ride. However, last year's box office success of the Minecraft movie brought him firmly back into the spotlight. The real question now is what kind of performance he'll deliver in yet another video game adaptation, 'Helldivers'.

Helldivers follows an elite assault unit tasked with defending Super Earth against formidable alien threats. Developed by the Swedish studio Arrowhead, the franchise gained massive popularity in Korea following the massive success of Helldivers 2 in 2024. Its hallmark features include intense 4-player co-op that somehow balances accidental team-killing with genuine camaraderie, all wrapped in a layer of dark, satirical comedy centered on blind devotion to Super Earth.

The live-action feature is being produced by PlayStation Productions, the arm responsible for adapting the brand's gaming library into film and television. Justin Lin, best known for the Fast & Furious series, is in the director's chair. Lin has stated his ambition is to highlight the humanity of the characters while weaving timely, relevant themes into the narrative. Interestingly, Momoa and Lin previously collaborated on 2023's Fast X.

Beyond Helldivers, PlayStation Productions is currently busy juggling a wide portfolio, including film adaptations of Horizon, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, and Gravity Rush, alongside television series based on The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and God of War.
