Mojang Studios held Minecraft Live on August 27, local time, and announced a brand new cave biome, the 'Icy Cave'.

The 'Icy Cave' relies on the interaction between light and shadow as its core visual concept, utilizing softly glowing ice crystals as its main light source. These ice crystals can be installed or stood upon by players, making them useful as building materials as well. Icicles form on the cave ceiling and will fall in response to strong light sources, dealing damage to players. Since icicles can also be placed as blocks by players, a strategic approach to torch placement within the cave becomes necessary.

The development team placed special emphasis on the visual characteristics of the 'Icy Cave'. A developer mentioned that the extreme contrast between lava and ice, while not entirely realistic, is both fascinating and beautiful, revealing that this surreal harmony holds a unique charm. The 'Icy Cave' also serves as a suitable mining environment. Because ores mostly spawn in stone or deepslate, players can easily spot ores inside the cave made of ice blocks. A special ability making ice easier to mine is also scheduled to be added, which should improve the resource-gathering experience for players.

Along with the 'Icy Cave', a new monster called the 'Frozen Zombie' makes its debut. This monster attacks players and inflicts the 'Freezing' status effect, causing movement speed reduction and extra damage. Being surrounded by multiple 'Frozen Zombie' variants can make escape difficult, putting players in highly perilous situations. The 'Frozen Zombie' sometimes spawns holding an 'Ice Ball', throwing it at players to inflict damage. The damage of the 'Ice Ball' is proportional to its velocity, meaning hits from closer ranges deal heavier damage. Defeating a 'Frozen Zombie' holding an 'Ice Ball' allows players to acquire the item, which can be used as a material to brew a 'Potion of Freezing' that inflicts minor damage and a slow effect, proving useful in Player-versus-Player (PVP) content.

The new content related to the 'Icy Cave' announced this time is set to enter testing shortly. Besides this, the Minecraft Live event also unveiled information regarding a new dimension called 'The Shift' and the theme park 'Minecraft World' opening in London in 2027, signaling an overall expansion of the Minecraft universe.
