Assemble Entertainment announced its upcoming mining adventure title, 'Glintseeker Island', on the 20th. Scheduled for a full release in 2027, the developer has also teased an upcoming Steam playtest to give us a taste of what is to come.
Glintseeker Island blends RPG mechanics with a mining exploration loop. Set in a charming 2D pixel-art world, players traverse procedurally generated caverns in search of ancient treasures and relics. The team admits they drew inspiration from the underground digging in 'Pokémon Diamond & Pearl' and the overall cave-delving atmosphere of 'Stardew Valley'.
Mining here isn't just about mindless clicking; it's a strategic mini-game where you must account for wall layers and hardness. Strike too recklessly and you'll risk a cave-in, potentially ending your expedition empty-handed. Of course, it's not just rocks down there—expect combat encounters and boss fights. Every ten levels, you'll hit a roadblock involving a boss or a puzzle that demands character progression and a bit of tactical thinking.

If you want to grow efficiently, you'll need to focus on upgrading your hammer and developing your village. Loot hauled safely to the surface can be sold to merchants or used at the forge. You start with a basic pickaxe, but you'll eventually unlock specialized hammers that help you bypass terrain and handle combat. There is also the familiar dance of inventory management, backpack expansion, and completing villager requests to uncover the lore hidden within the island.
This playtest packs in quite a bit: three biomes, 21 levels, eight new hammers, and systems for hammer/backpack upgrades, ingot smelting, and opening geodes. You can also dive into six village restoration projects, try out five cloaks with special effects, and engage in trading or side quests.
Oh, and for those who enjoy the smaller details, you can feed or pet your canine companion, 'Shadow'. You can sign up for the playtest via the Steam store page. Once approved, it will appear in your library. A word of warning from the devs: previous save files might not play nice with this version, so starting fresh is the way to go.
