To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, a rather unconventional spin-off is heading our way. Developed as a collaboration between Game Freak and Omega Force, the new sandbox title 'Pokémon Pocopia' is set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 this March 5th, with official Korean subtitle support. With a concept that has fans dubbing it 'Pokémon meets Animal Crossing'—where you play as a Ditto that has transformed into a human to pick up Pokémon skills and build a village—the buzz is real. Interestingly, even though the retail package contains a key card rather than a physical game cartridge, the pre-order frenzy has been quite something.

As mentioned, you play as a Ditto. Your mission? To restore a desolate, barren landscape—once home to many humans and Pokémon—back to its former lush, green glory. Using Ditto's signature 'Transform' ability, you can learn and utilise various Pokémon skills, ranging from item crafting and farming to full-scale home construction. It is safe to say you will truly feel the versatility of this 'jack-of-all-trades' Ditto throughout Pokémon Pocopia.

The premise of Pokémon Pocopia is a bit of a tear-jerker: you wake from a long slumber in a village devoid of humans, Pokémon, and even vegetation. The only soul left in this bleak wasteland is a rather peculiar-looking Tangela. Guided by this Tangela, Ditto takes on a human form—complete with customizable gender, hair, and outfits—to get to work on rebuilding.

Throughout this process, Ditto can mimic the skills of other Pokémon. Need more greenery? Use Bulbasaur's 'Vine Whip' to grow plants. Need to water them? Borrow a page from Squirtle's book with 'Water Gun'. You can even pick up Hitmonlee's wall-smashing combat skills or take flight and swim by transforming into Lapras or Dragonite. It is worth noting that while using these skills, parts of your human form physically shift—for instance, your arms might turn into vines when channelling Bulbasaur.

While Ditto leads the charge, doing it alone is a fool's errand. You need to lure as many Pokémon as possible to your village to build a community. The first step is providing habitats. By placing the required amount of materials like rocks or grass in the field, you construct habitats that can attract rare Pokémon you have never seen before.

Once they arrive, befriending these Pokémon unlocks new skills and cooperative tasks. You might work together to light a campfire, use electricity to power streetlights, or speed up plant growth. You can also engage in social activities like chatting, sharing berries, or going on outings. Sometimes, a friend might even invite you to play special games like 'Jump Rope'.

Pokémon living in your village will often ask for favors—ranging from clearing difficult terrain to escorting them to specific locations. Completing these requests yields rewards or uncovers hidden secrets. Crucial tasks, such as 'Rebuilding the Pokémon Center,' are vital for village development and require a collective effort.

Beyond simple environment improvement, you can build quite a lot. Crafting is key: gather stone and wood, head to a workbench, and start assembling. Whether it is making toys for your Pokémon friends, constructing streetlamps, or paving roads, the options are plentiful. You can even craft furniture for your homes.

There is also farming for crops and building houses for your Pokémon residents. With enough help, you can erect structures using various wall and floor types to fit your aesthetic. You can decorate interiors and exteriors to your heart's content and even snap commemorative photos of your village and friends.

It is interesting to note that the Pokémon in Pocopia speak like humans rather than using their traditional cries. Since the protagonist is a Ditto in human form and cooperation is central to the gameplay, this shift seems to be a design choice to facilitate better narrative flow and player immersion.

Beyond the 'Tangela (Professor)' who guides Ditto, other peculiar Pokémon appear. There is Smeargle ('Painter') with paint splatters all over, a ghostly white Pikachu ('Pale'), and Snorlax covered in moss ('Mossy'). These designs have sparked theories that Pokémon Pocopia might actually be set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Pokémon Pocopia syncs with real-world time. Once your village reaches a certain level of development, you can invite other players to visit. Whether visiting others or hosting, the game supports multiplayer for up to 4 players via both online and local communication.

It also supports the Switch 2's 'Share Play' feature. With just one copy of the software, you can share the game with others who don't own it. Share Play allows up to 2 players in a 'Blank Village' scenario, and via local connection, you can even share the experience with users on the previous-generation Nintendo Switch.
