A new project for 'RPG Maker', the engine behind numerous hit titles, has been announced. It features an 'HD-2D' style aesthetic, where 2D characters move within a 3D environment.

Gotcha Gotcha Games released a teaser video for the 'new RPG Maker project' on the 26th. The one-minute clip looks back at the history of RPG Maker and showcases the features of this upcoming title.

The most significant change is the ability to create games where 2D pixel-art characters move across three-dimensional backgrounds with depth. Additionally, advanced lighting effects have been introduced, such as light from fireplaces and lamps in dark rooms, or streetlights at night, which cast realistic shadows. This project appears to allow creators to implement the 'HD-2D' style popularized by Square Enix titles like Octopath Traveler.

RPG Maker is an RPG creation tool developed by Gotcha Gotcha Games, a subsidiary of Kadokawa. It allows users to create simple RPGs without professional programming knowledge, and with enough skill, it is possible to build highly polished games. In fact, titles such as Eerenal, Ib, Ao Oni, the To the Moon series, and The Witch's House were all developed using RPG Maker and gained significant popularity.
