Sometimes, the meme becomes so potent that it devours the original character entirely, leaving you wondering, "Wait, who were they actually supposed to be?" Today, we are looking at the characters whose official personas and internet-born identities are worlds apart.

The Mr. X of the Resident Evil 2 remake, or the 'Tyrant,' is the ultimate bioweapon forged by Umbrella. With his emotionless gaze, imposing physical presence, and the heavy, rhythmic thud of his footsteps, he has kept many a player awake at night. He is the very embodiment of horror, trudging through walls, completely unfazed by your pathetic attempts to stop him.

But the power of the internet is terrifying. Players began layering DMX’s 'X Gon' Give It To Ya' over his appearances, and strangely, it synced perfectly with his casual, measured stride. As the meme spread, the Tyrant ceased to be a terrifying bioweapon and morphed into a 'hip-hop warrior breaking down doors to a beat.' Mods soon followed, decking him out in sunglasses and gold chains, or even forcing the song to play in-game. Now, when the Tyrant shows up, the fear is replaced by a spontaneous desire to hum along.

Meet Song Ha-na, the Korean hero of Overwatch. She is a 19-year-old genius pro-gamer and an ROK Army soldier piloting a mech to protect her homeland. In official cinematics, she is depicted as a solitary, serious figure who would sacrifice herself for her comrades. She is, for all intents and purposes, a national treasure, a star, and a bona fide hero.

However, the internet-born 'Gremlin D.Va' completely dismantled that serious façade. Picture her in a hoodie, face smeared with Dorito dust, chugging Mountain Dew like a hard-core gaming addict. The image caught on so well that her identity as a soldier began to wane, eventually leading Blizzard to officially adopt the 'Gremlin' persona as an in-game emote. Honestly? I prefer this version over the perfect, polished Song Ha-na.

Dorothy from Nikke carries a more tragic narrative than perhaps any other character. She is a hero betrayed after saving humanity, a complex figure torn between vengeance and nobility. Every expression she makes in-game is steeped in profound sorrow and rage. At least, that was the case until the players turned her into 'Dororong.'

With her white, rounded body and blank, vacant eyes, 'Dororong' has become a bigger icon than Dorothy herself. The heavy, somber atmosphere of the original game is nowhere to be found; gamers worldwide are obsessed with this creature sprinting at absurd speeds or acting in bizarre, inexplicable ways. There is even a running joke that Dorothy is actually the one cosplaying as Dororong. Now, I can’t help but smile whenever I see the original character.

This is a particularly brilliant case, given it is based on a real person. Gandhi, the global icon of 'non-violent resistance,' is known in the Civilization series as the 'Nuke Man.' Rumors spread like wildfire among players: "Gandhi threatened to take our gold in exchange for corn," or "He was supposed to be a pacifist, but a programming error made him hyper-aggressive."

In truth, the corn-and-gold rumor was a fabrication from Civilization 5—a game that didn't even have corn as a resource. Sid Meier himself debunked the 'programming error' theory, confirming no such bug existed. But it was too late. The players were already wedded to the image of 'Warlord Gandhi,' and the benevolent historical figure had been permanently replaced by a warmonger in the eyes of the community. In the end, the developers seemed to give up, with recent titles explicitly setting Gandhi's nuclear aggression stat to the maximum, half-embracing this twisted meme.

In the 90s, Sonic was the definition of 'cool,' the pride of Sega who outran the speed of sound while mocking Nintendo’s Mario. But when Sega retreated from the hardware market and shook hands with Nintendo, Sonic’s status took a turn for the surreal.
