No Man's Sky, widely regarded as a prime example of a successful turnaround in the space-themed gaming genre, has officially hit its 10-year milestone. The key factor behind this shift in public opinion is the relentless dedication of the development team, who have consistently filled in the gaps with steady updates. Even now, they are gearing up for their 41st major update.

Sean Murray, the lead of Hello Games, released a developer note on August 10 to mark the 10th anniversary of No Man's Sky. He stated, "On August 9, 2016, travelers from across the cosmos first stepped onto alien worlds in No Man's Sky," adding, "Millions of players have turned No Man's Sky into their own home, building incredible bases, fostering communities, forging friendships, and crafting unique custom ships."

When No Man's Sky launched in August 2016, it faced harsh criticism for having a vast but empty universe. Since then, the developers have released 40 major free updates, fulfilling the promise of a 'packed universe' made before launch. Based on these efforts, the game's Steam user rating recovered to 'Very Positive' by 2018. By the time Bethesda's Starfield launched in September 2023, many were even claiming that No Man's Sky was the superior experience.

And the journey of No Man's Sky is far from over. Murray noted, "Even after all these years, players have explored less than 1% of the planets in No Man's Sky. We believe there is still endless potential for what No Man's Sky can become," adding, "We will share more details soon with the upcoming update, 'COSMOS'."

Meanwhile, the studio's next project, Light No Fire, is also well underway. First unveiled at The Game Awards 2023, this title is a new project that weaves together adventure, building, survival, and exploration on an earth-sized planet with a fantasy aesthetic.
