It even caused hardware shortages for the new Nintendo Switch 2 console, proving to be an absolute phenomenon.

Over to the Game Designers Award, which goes to creative works, Team Nine's Letterplay walked away with the prize. The developer earned massive praise for its originality, featuring a world built entirely of words—from objects to the protagonist—where players push or delete letters to solve puzzles. Notably, this award, established by Masahiro Sakurai back in 2010, is slated to be retired after this 17th edition, making this final winner quite a historic piece. Meanwhile, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award went to the Pokémon IP, which has kept up cross-platform innovations ever since the very first title dropped in 1996.

Capcom's Pragmata grabbed the Innovation Award, which highlights fresh systems. The developer turned hacking puzzles into the core pillar of combat and dodging rather than just a side mechanic, earning praise for delivering a totally different feel from traditional shooters. Finally, Lemolion's Metcha Chameleon bagged the Movement Award for cultural impact. The developer implemented a unique hide-and-seek mechanic where players splash paint to blend into the background, sparking a massive craze and smashing past 20 million copies sold in just two months since launch.
