Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember tells the story of a phoenix soaring amidst endless warfare. Set in China in the year 2008 AD, the protagonist and friend Pang Tong's village is trampled by Cao Cao's forces, plunging the world back into chaos as demons begin to run rampant. The protagonist carves out a path alongside Liu Bei in resistance against Cao Cao and joins forces with Sun Quan of Jiangdong, while Pang Tong devises strategies with the military advisors of Sun Quan and Liu Bei's armies to repel Cao Cao, who eyes 'Red Cliffs'.

In the new installment, the freely moving 'acrobatic Chinese action' has evolved further, allowing players to reinforce various actions with 'Yellow Qi' and execute counterattacks utilizing terrain. Furthermore, the game offers a shifting open field where numerous battlefields from famous Three Kingdoms scenes, such as the Battle of Changban and the Battle of Red Cliffs, are depicted as vast open areas. Players can tackle multi-layered battlefields, including mountain fortresses and hidden outposts, using diverse strategies.

Key characters include the protagonist possessing the 'Huang' orb infused with the power of the divine beast Phoenix, Pang Tong the scholar well-versed in strategy and military tactics, Wolong who excels in both scholarship and martial arts, and Cao Pi, the ruthless and merciless legitimate son of Cao Cao. They play their respective roles within an original story fusing the Three Kingdoms chaotic era with dark fantasy, set against a backdrop of warfare fraught with 'demons' motived by legendary figures from Chinese classics.
