AI Summary
Dynamis One and NC hosted the first global closed beta test for Asuora. The game blends Neo-Denki aesthetics with strategic turn-based action. Developers are actively tuning combat tempo and rewards based on player feedback.

From October 2 to 6, Astraea Oratio (hereinafter referred to as Asuora), developed by Dynamis One and published by NC, held its first global closed beta test to put its core gameplay to the test. It earned solid reviews for its 'Neo-Denki' theme spanning from the 1980s to the early 2000s, strategic combat blending real-time action with turn-based mechanics, and characters boasting distinct tactics and charm.
So, how is Asuora shaping up as the team processes feedback from the test? We sat down with Dynamis One Game Director Lim Jong-gyu and Art Director Kim In to chat about how they plan to reflect player feedback and what post-launch updates look like. We also dug into the Neo-Denki theme and the background of the protagonist (the player), who happens to be a government section chief.
How would you sum up the very first global closed beta test?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: This test was an invaluable opportunity to see how the fun we've been cooking up actually lands with players. Big thanks to everyone who jumped in and sent us such detailed thoughts. The positive reception to the story and art gave us a massive morale boost. We also gathered a ton of constructive notes on the combat and areas needing polish, and we are going to use that foundation to return with a much tighter experience. While specific reactions varied a bit by region, the way people picked up on the charm we wanted to convey and genuinely enjoyed it felt pretty universal. It really makes you realise that boundaries vanish when people are looking at something they love. Otakus truly are a single global village, mate.
What do the developers consider the core of Asuora's Neo-Denki universe? We are also curious if you have plans to expand the worldview down the line, perhaps by ramping up the interference between daily life and the mystical realm, or by opening up new regions.
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: The contrast between the mundane rhythm of a familiar city and a mystical realm where magic exists, paired with the artwork and overall mood capturing that clash. We are definitely eyeing expansions into new territories. Beyond just growing inside the game, we secretly dream of branching out into media mixes one day to tell stories of different regions and faces. That feeling of various channels connecting to stretch out a single expanding universe is the ultimate charm of live-service and original IP games. We want to craft Asuora into a world you will want to explore alongside us for a long, long time.
Why did you settle on an art style and color palette reminiscent of 90s Japanese anime, and what did you focus on to bring that vibe into the modern era?
Art Director Kim In: It all kicked off from the concept of 'magic', the 'Neo-Denki' theme, and the setting of 'Tokyo'. Right from the early development days, rather than leaning on the usual near-future or standard fantasy tropes, we focused on modernising the nostalgia and emotional resonance of the late 1980s to early 2000s works that influenced us. We wanted to bottle that unique atmospheric air you felt in classic Neo-Denki titles of that era. Instead of just copying old art styles, our main direction was to remix that distinct period nostalgia and the pleasant atmosphere of 'Nostalgia Tokyo' to fit current trends. For the palette, we designed it around the winter air and day-night contrast that naturally pops into mind when thinking of 'Neo-Denki'. To capture that chilly winter vibe, we built a blue-centric color tone while balancing it out with pink and green hints reminiscent of spring to keep things from getting too gloomy. We also applied black-and-white contrasts to the graphic design and layout to punch up the day-and-night dynamic.DoReMi took the reins for the overall art style and foundation, capturing that transitional era from cels to digital animation to deliver a thick, textured, handmade feel. The character designs also inherit thick lines and stroke details typical of 90s-2000s animation. Building on this direction, alongside DoReMi and background artist feev99, we carved out Asuora's signature visual identity. We hope players can truly feel that texture in the game's visuals.

What drove the decision to make the protagonist a government 'section chief'? Will this role expand moving forward, and what kind of figure do you plan to shape them into?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: In the worldview cooked up by our scenario director, various events pop off between factions divided across different regions. It is structured to handle everything from small-scale regional sports rivalries to massive clashes between cities. To let the protagonist meddle in these factional dynamics, we landed on 'administration' as the theme, giving birth to the section chief—an official from the Special District Bureau. The section chief and the mages (in-game characters) fill in each other's blind spots. The section chief isn't clued into the reverse side of the world, but they can untangle messes using the rules and bureaucracy of the surface world. Conversely, mages know the reverse side inside out, but they need a bit of hand-holding to survive on the surface. We aim to drive the section chief's journey through this mutual reliance. We hope players look forward to teaming up with mages from the section chief's perspective and weaving stories across various territories and factions.
The opening story dropped during the test was quite a shocker. As we understand it, an ordinary government worker living a dreamless life in modern reality hands in their resignation and slips into a parallel-world Tokyo—what was the design intent behind this?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: When crafting the prologue, the scenario director obsessed over the first 30 minutes of play. We set it up so players could effortlessly sink into the tale right after booting up, sparking curiosity for what comes next and the nature of this other world.

The narrative delivery changed depending on the segment during the test. Some sections rolled out the story sequentially on a single screen, while others required hopping around various areas within a town.
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: We rolled out different progression styles tailored to each region and story beat. We mixed things up from narrative-heavy segments focusing purely on plot flow to exploration parts where players wander across multiple locations to soak in local vibes and events. We plan to keep rolling out varied progression styles to best serve each story's charm.
The voice acting splashed across the main and side stories won massive praise. However, some players felt let down by the lack of voice acting or subtitles in certain segments and content. What are your plans for voice coverage at launch, alongside multi-language dubs and subtitle support beyond Japanese?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: For launch, we are aiming to pack in Japanese voice acting across core narratives, including the main story, as fully as possible. We are also planning to patch in voice lines for the latter half of the main story that missed the test deadline. Subtitles will be rolled out strictly where needed to aid comprehension and meaning, and we will double-check any missing gaps to keep improving. We are looking into dubs in languages other than Japanese, but given our current dev team's capacity and production scale, landing them right at launch feels a bit tricky. We hope to build experience post-service, check our production headroom, and consider expanding then. We will work hard so that even more players can vividly experience the charm of Asuora's story and characters.
The character personalities are remarkably sharp. Could you explain the mechanisms used to give each clan distinct vibes while still keeping the overall worldview's art style unified?
Art Director Kim In: We assign distinct themes and key colors to every clan, making sure they do not step on each other's toes or clash with neighbouring charms. Ensuring the characters feel right at home when operating within their clan's home turf is another detail we keep a close eye on.When it comes to keeping the art style unified, our main priority is making sure the color schemes do not stick out awkwardly and maintain balance when characters share a single stage. Beyond that, we tie things together by slapping common rules across the entire IP for specific elements like line-art thickness, eyes, and hair.

Could you also walk us through what you obsessed over most when translating 2D characters into 3D?
Art Director Kim In: When translating 2D into 3D, our focus was nailing the unique charm of each medium. Rather than simply copy-pasting illustrations into 3D, we wanted to capture the magic exclusive to three-dimensional expression—like fluid character motion, spatial depth, and free camera angles. On the 2D front, we aggressively utilized Spine animations to keep things moving rather than letting illustrations sit statically, preserving that unique 2D flavor all over the game. The visual delight born from these contrasting expression methods blending together is another core appeal of Asuora.

The combat system blending turn-based tactics with real-time action was quite striking. Why combine them instead of picking just one, and what is your ultimate goal for it?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: We wanted to pack in both the physical satisfaction of directly steering characters and the cerebral thrill of scheming your next move. The starting point of Asuora's combat was fusing the reaction-reading, opening-hunting combo flow of fighting games with turn-based resource management. The glue holding this together is the action resource, AP. You choose whether to dump points into relentless attacks or hold back for defense, forcing you into split-second inputs paired with long-term tactical planning. Ultimately, we are chasing a combat style where every character's fighting personality shines, and players carve out and seize opportunities through their own judgment and controls.
During the test, players flagged some combat balance gripes, such as being forced to field specific characters to counter enemy patterns, losing leftover AP upon killing an enemy, and meager rewards for successful parries.
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: For this test, our goal was to lay down strict combat rules and put them through the wringer to prep for the next phase. Rather than scattering compromises right out of the gate, we wanted to see what kind of fun and friction cropped up under rigid rules. Problems have to stand out starkly so we can map out concrete fixes and judge whether subsequent tweaks actually deliver a better experience.Being forced to slot in certain characters, losing unspent AP on enemy kills, and weak parry rewards were all critical pieces of feedback caught during that process, and our current rules are by no means locked in as the final draft. In particular, we are tweaking remaining AP so combat tempo doesn't stall, and overhauling parries to dish out tangible rewards. We will adjust based on the test feedback and put the results through another round of testing.

Auto-battle was supported during the test, but the efficiency gap compared to manual play was massive. Given the repetitive grinding required, manual play fatigue ran quite high. Do you have plans to tune auto-battle or toss in convenience features like quick sweeps and speed-ups?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: To preserve the perks of manual combat where you think and control things yourself, we plan to keep a sensible efficiency gap against auto-battle. That said, we are speeding up auto-battle execution and mulling over extra speed options to trim down grinding fatigue. We are also massively expanding repeat-run limits to a pain-free level, and while it won't be a conventional sweep system, we are cooking up features to grab essential resources more conveniently. We will do our best to balance the raw joy of playing battles yourself with quality-of-life features for repeated runs.
Based on the user feedback reeled in from the closed beta, what are you dead set on fixing before launch? On the flip side, what is Asuora's signature trait that you will guard to the end regardless of feedback?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: A lot of folks pointed out elements disrupting the flow and tempo of combat, and the dev team agrees those need a good thrashing. For the launch build, we are polishing things so combat flows much more smoothly.I don't think there's anything we must blindly cling to regardless of feedback. However, the strategic thrill you get from judging situations and executing manual controls is a direction we hold dear in Asuora. Even while offering auto-battle conveniences, we want to maintain the edge manual play gives you in pulling off better outcomes through situational choices.
Many players complained that progression materials were too scarce, making it tough to raise a wide roster. Do you have plans to ease the burden regarding material supply and roster resets?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: For the official release, we are gearing up administrative content and seasonal events that weren't shown off in the test so players can farm upgrade materials much more smoothly. We are also looking into features to transfer artifact (character equip gear) progression, adding various systems to ensure raising a diverse roster doesn't feel like an absolute chore.

Could you break down your overall monetisation direction, including gacha structures combining characters and artifacts, alongside pity systems?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: The overall monetisation structure isn't set in stone just yet. We are reviewing tweaks based on player feedback, so things might shift by launch. Broadly speaking, we are prepping it to stay well within standard norms for the subculture genre. You should be able to collect characters and enjoy the game purely through steady play, and we plan to tune specific structures and figures with that benchmark in mind.

Just how meaty is the content scale looking at launch? We are also curious about post-launch update plans.
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: It is tough to give a definitive answer on total content volume right now since we are still building it. However, we showcased 18 characters in this test, and we are aiming to roll out roughly 30 at launch. Post-launch, we plan to push monthly updates, adding about 30 new characters annually.End-game content hits differently for every player, I reckon. That said, we aren't planning to plant competitive modes or PvP at the ultimate finish line. Much like waiting for the next chapter of a serialized book, we want to build a game where you can look forward to fresh content, stories, and challenges every single month.Much like theme park zones popping up at Disneyland or Universal Studios, we want to expand fresh things to do while keeping our familiar fun intact. The goal is to build a game where playing longer widens your choices rather than piling on extra baggage.Of course, we will also prep content for players who live for challenges and a sense of achievement. We are reviewing the addition of score trials (stage-by-stage boss rushes) and seasonal world raids as viable directions.
This test ran exclusively on mobile, but we heard a PC port is on the way as well.
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: We are getting things ready so you can enjoy it on PC, but whether mobile and PC versions drop simultaneously isn't set yet. Specific launch dates will be announced later through official channels.
What are your communication plans leading up to launch, including AGF in December, alongside your IP expansion roadmap?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: We are jumping into AGF 2026 as a main sponsor. Since this is our first offline meetup face-to-face with domestic players, we are prepping it so you can experience Asuora's worldview and character charm up close and personal.Around the launch window, we plan to fire up various online and offline marketing campaigns across key regions like South Korea and Japan to widen our touchpoints with players. Since Asuora is a subculture title where character and story charm reign supreme, we want to push merchandising and various business ventures so people can enjoy the IP beyond just the screen.

Lastly, any parting words for the fans waiting on Asuora?
Game Director Lim Jong-gyu: A huge thank you to everyone waiting on Asuora and sending in such affectionate notes through the test. We are working our fingers to the bone prepping for launch, fuelled by your expectations and constructive critiques. Please look forward to the stories we will weave together in Asuora moving forward. We ask for lots of interest and cheers, mate.
Art Director Kim In: Thanks a million for your massive expectations and support. The whole dev team is throwing everything we've got into hitting our launch target. We are gearing up to show off Asuora's diverse charms and sights even after launch, so please keep an eye on the fresh sides of Asuora yet to unfold.
