The festive season's 'free game' giveaway on the Epic Games Store has hit a frustrating snag for players in South Korea.

Following the kickoff with Hogwarts Legacy, Epic Games has been rolling out a string of daily freebies since the 12th as part of their 2025 holiday sale. However, when 'Disco Elysium - The Final Cut' went live for the giveaway at 1:00 AM on the 26th, players were greeted with a message stating, 'The game is currently checking or preparing for release procedures in the Republic of Korea,' effectively locking out the region.

An official from Epic Games Korea confirmed, 'It is correct that the South Korean region is excluded,' and added, 'In cases like this, it is highly likely that the developer has set the service to be unavailable in specific countries.'

While 'Disco Elysium - The Final Cut' did receive a rating classification in Korea, it was originally applied for by Bada Games. On the Epic Games Store, however, the publisher is listed as the developer, ZA/UM. It is presumed that ZA/UM, now handling both development and publishing, may have restricted access on the Epic Games Store because they have not personally obtained a separate rating classification.

That said, under the Game Industry Promotion Act, if the game content remains unchanged, a re-classification is not strictly required even if the publisher changes. Thus, it remains a mystery why this title, which has already been rated, is being blocked from domestic access. Gamemeca reached out to Epic Games Korea for clarification, but we are still waiting for a response.

On a side note, the original 'Disco Elysium'—not 'The Final Cut'—did receive its own rating classification on June 5th following an application submitted by ZA/UM Studio.

에픽게임즈 코리아 관계자에 따르면 "한국 지역은 제외가 맞다"고 밝히며 "이런 경우는 보통 개발사에서 서비스를 하지 않는 국가로 설정했을 가능성이 높다"고 밝혔다.

'디스코 엘리시움 - 최종판'은 한국에서 등급분류를 받은 바 있으나, 당시 등급분류를 받은 신청자는 바다게임즈다. 하지만 에픽게임즈 스토어에는 퍼블리셔가 개발사인 자움(ZA/UM)으로 기재돼 있다. 이에 개발 및 퍼블리싱을 모두 맡은 자움 측에서 자체적으로 등급을 받지 않았다는 이유로 에픽게임즈 스토어 한국 접근 권한을 막은 것이 아닌가 추정된다.

다만, 게임산업진흥에 관한 법률에 따르면 퍼블리셔가 변경되더라도 게임 내용에 수정이 없다면 원칙적으로 등급을 재분류할 필요는 없다. 이에 따라 한 차례 등급분류를 받은 바 있는 '디스코 엘리시움 - 최종판'이 별도의 심의를 받을 의무가 없음에도 국내에서 접속을 불가능하게 만든 이유는 불명이다. 이에 대해 게임메카는 에픽게임즈 코리아 측에 이유를 물었으나, 아직 답변을 받지 못했다.
