Translating a game into live-action is a thankless, treacherous business. Stick too close to the source material, and you get accused of being unrealistic; lean too hard into reinterpretation, and you're branded a heretic. Of course, when a production manages to nail the perfect likeness or twists the source material so cleverly that it creates a compelling new visual language, we applaud. Ultimately, it seems it all comes down to the vision—or lack thereof—of the creators.

But occasionally, the live-action process delivers a visual disaster that burns the retinas. Look no further than the early reveal of Sonic in the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie. Between the beady eyes and the disturbingly human-like teeth, it hit every note on the 'uncanny valley' scale. The backlash was nuclear, and the design was swiftly scrapped. Today, we're taking a look at characters who, much like the original 'Ugly Sonic', arrived on screen looking so bizarre they left fans in a state of pure, unadulterated shock.

When the trailer for 'A Minecraft Movie' dropped in the autumn of 2024, featuring Jack Black, the internet split right down the middle. Seeing the iconic blocky geometry of Minecraft slapped with hyper-realistic fur and leather textures was, frankly, a visual assault. The pink sheep and the llama were the worst offenders, hitting the 'uncanny valley' dead centre. Square bodies, coarse real-world animal fur, wet noses, and eyes that seemed to panic with human-like awareness—I honestly wondered if it was an elaborate April Fools' joke.

Some critics invoked the 'Ugly Sonic' debacle, predicting the film was destined for failure. Paradoxically, the controversy fueled its success. The trailer scenes and dialogue became viral memes, and when paired with Jack Black's typically boisterous performance, the film turned the mockery into box-office gold. In the end, 'A Minecraft Movie' actually surpassed 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' to become the highest-grossing video game live-action movie ever. Looking back, the sheep even seems a bit charming now, doesn't it?

Netflix's 'The Witcher' Season 1 introduced us to the Nilfgaardian Empire. In the games, these soldiers are terrifying, clad in pristine, intimidating black plate armour. What we got in the show was, well, a wrinkled, saggy mess. Fans didn't hold back, calling it everything from 'trash bags' to 'melted plastic'. Some even came up with a rather unmentionable nickname involving a certain part of the male anatomy.

The production team defended the choice, claiming they wanted to convey the 'hastily recruited, dirty look of a massive army', but the fans weren't buying it. Bowing to the ridicule, the costume department completely redesigned the armour for Season 2, returning to something resembling actual metal plating. It’s still not quite as iconic as the game's version, but it’s a massive improvement over the original disaster.

The legendary fighting game series 'Tekken' couldn't escape the live-action curse either. The 2010 Hollywood adaptation is a disaster from start to finish, but the character assassination of Kazuya Mishima takes the cake. In the games, Kazuya is a cold, charismatic martial artist with a sharp widow's peak and devilish powers. In the film? He’s a third-rate villain sporting a bushy moustache and dual-wielding battle axes. Since when does a master of the Mishima Style Karate need axes? And don't even get me started on the total erasure of the Devil Gene.

Even after the movie tanked, we were cursed with a 2014 sequel titled 'Tekken 2: Kazuya's Revenge'. They swapped the actor, but the face on the poster looks more like Marshall Law or a budget Bruce Lee knock-off than Kazuya. It’s a complete disregard for the source material that would be offensive even if it weren't using the 'Tekken' name. Despite stiff competition from equally butchered characters like Steve Fox and Heihachi, Kazuya takes the crown for sheer visual absurdity.

2019's 'Detective Pikachu' was largely praised for its grounded take on the Pokémon world. A fuzzy Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds? Surprisingly cute. But some creatures were pushed into full-on creature-horror territory. While the Mr. Mime design was unsettling, the one that truly made gamers recoil was Lickitung.

The scene where Lickitung licks the protagonist's face feels like biological warfare. The texture of that tongue, complete with realistic, bumpy papillae and viscous, spider-web-like saliva, was so visceral you could almost smell it through the screen. While the screen time was short and it was clearly intended for a gross-out laugh, seeing the typically cute pink Lickitung from the games transformed into something out of a B-grade monster flick remains a traumatic memory.

Our number one spot goes to the grandfather of game-to-film disasters: 'Super Mario Bros.' This film took the colourful, whimsical Mushroom Kingdom and threw it into a dreary, cyberpunk dystopian city called 'Dinohattan'. Bowser looked like he was about to eat a human, and the Goombas were transformed into shrunken-headed, suit-wearing monstrosities. While those were at least bad guys, the real crime was what they did to our adorable buddy, Yoshi.

Since his debut in 'Super Mario World', Yoshi has been the pinnacle of cuteness in the Mario franchise. To 'realistically' depict him, the production threw cutting-edge animatronics at the screen. The result? A bloodthirsty velociraptor that looked like it had escaped from 'Jurassic Park'. Actually, since this film predates the park, maybe he's the ancestor? Instead of a loyal mount for the plumbers, the film's Yoshi radiated a cold, predatory hunger. This nightmare, born in the name of 'live-action', is more than deserving of the top spot.
