2K has officially announced a massive free update for its strategy game 'Sid Meier's Civilization VII' (hereinafter Civilization VII), titled 'Test of Time'. The update will be available to all players for free on May 19. This update includes new features that allow players to play as a single civilization throughout all eras, as well as a complete overhaul of the victory conditions.

A key feature of the update is the 'Timeless Civilizations' mode. This feature allows players to choose a new civilization when transitioning between eras during gameplay, or to maintain their existing civilization through to the next era. AI opponents will also adapt to the player's choice, either maintaining a single civilization or switching to a new one.

The victory conditions have also been completely overhauled. Players must secure dominance in one of four fields: Military, Economic, Cultural, or Scientific. Victory conditions can now be achieved as early as the Ancient Era, making it possible to win as early as the Age of Discovery. Additionally, the 'Great Success' system is being introduced to replace the existing 'Path to Greatness' system. This system provides various optional challenges linked to six traits: Military, Cultural, Scientific, Economic, Diplomatic, and Expansionist.

Developer Firaxis stated that when they first conceived Civilization VII, they aimed to approach the traditional structure of the Civilization series with new mechanics based on a more nuanced historical perspective. The developer noted that they maintained this structure while adhering to the cross-era strategy gameplay that many players desired, and that player feedback since the February 2025 launch was instrumental in achieving their original ambitious vision. Furthermore, they added that participants in the Firaxis feature workshop played a key role in verifying and refining the 'Test of Time' features over the past few months.
