After a decade-long drought since 2017's 'Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite', a Marvel-based fighting game is finally making a comeback. Developed by Arc System Works, the studio that cemented its reputation as a powerhouse of the genre with Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, comes 'Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls' (hereinafter 'Marvel Tōkon'). It launches with a roster of 20 Marvel characters, focusing on a 4v4 tag-team combat system.

Players can explore new combos, synergies, and tactical depths through team compositions, while an 'Episode Mode' offers a fresh story set within the Marvel Universe. The developers aimed to strike a balance: maintaining deep competitive mechanics while ensuring the game remains accessible to newcomers through intuitive controls and a comprehensive tutorial system.

Marvel Tōkon puts the spotlight on building your own dream team from a cast of characters familiar through comics, animation, and film. At launch, there are 20 characters spread across five factions. Regarding the lineup, the development team stated, 'We selected essential characters that define the Marvel IP, then added a few surprises to ensure variety.' The factions are as follows.

There are also six stages based on the Marvel universe. These include Asgard (Odin's Hall), Wakanda (where nature meets high-tech), Marvel New York (Day) featuring three distinct zones, Marvel New York (Night) with its neon glow, the Savage Land (a hidden tropical preserve in Antarctica), X-Mansion (the training ground for mutants), and the cosmic expanse of Knowhere. Some stages feature interactive transitions; if you land specific skills, combos, or grabs at the edge of the screen, the stage will shift.

Marvel Tōkon centers on 4v4 tag battles. You choose four characters from the 20 available—one main and three assists. The match follows a best-of-five format, with all four characters sharing a single health bar. However, you don't start with all four; you begin with two (one main, one assist), and additional team members join as you trigger stage transitions, wall breaks, or lose a round.

As teammates join, your 'Assemble Gauge' (used for assist skills) and 'Skill Gauge' (for ultimates) capacity increases. In particular, the 'Fight! Assemble' move, which consumes 150 points of the Skill Gauge, triggers a spectacular team-wide assault reminiscent of 'Avengers Assemble'. During the Arc World Tour in March, the demo showcased an assist mode with automatic combos and simplified ultimate inputs, proving that the entry barrier is intentionally low.

The game also features a robust tutorial system. The 'Startup Battle' teaches the basics of 4v4 combat and team systems, allowing you to test skills before jumping into the fray. The Training Mode lets you take control of every character to practice combos. Additionally, the 'Episode Mode,' penned by Marvel writers, offers a narrative deep dive into the relationships and backstories of your team.

Marvel Tōkon launches on August 7 for PC and PS5, with full cross-play support. Locally, you can challenge friends or practice against the CPU. The online lobby hosts up to 64 players and includes casual matchmaking and ranked play. PC users will need a PlayStation account, and PS5 players require a PlayStation Plus membership for online modes.

On PS5, the team aims to deliver an immersive experience using Tempest 3D AudioTech, ultra-high-speed SSD, 4K resolution, and haptic feedback. Notably, the game supports Korean subtitles and full voice-over. The PC version also features 4K support, a locked 60 FPS for smooth combat, and DualSense haptic feedback. PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers are supported, with full button customisation available.

You can get a taste of the content two weeks before launch with the Open Beta, running from July 24 at 4 PM to July 27 at 3:59 PM. No pre-registration is required; simply download the client from the PlayStation Store or Steam. Pre-loading starts two hours before the beta begins. PlayStation Plus is not required for the beta, though PC users will still need to link a PlayStation account.

The Open Beta will feature 15 of the 20 characters: Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Panther (Fighting Avengers); Storm, Magik, Wolverine, and Danger (Unbreakable X-Men); Spider-Man, Ms. Marvel, and Star-Lord (Amazing Guardians); Doctor Doom and Magneto (Knights of Doom); and Ghost Rider and Blade (Samurai Outriders). You can also experience online play, tutorials, and the first three chapters of the 'Amazing Guardians' story, where Spider-Man recruits a team to face a global threat. The Open Beta also supports Korean subtitles and audio.
