"Age Twisters" first broke cover back in June alongside its Steam page reveal. Crafted by the Barcelona-based Piccolo Studio, founded in 2017, a team of roughly 30 developers is pouring their hearts into building an experience driven by emotional beats, original mechanics, and striking art.

True to form, the minds behind it have cooked up a cooperative game rooted in the wholesome theme of bridging generational divides and shaking off stale prejudices. Age gaps, especially the friction between the young and the old, are as old as time. Elders get written off as stuck in the past, while previous generations take the heat for dropping the ball. Meanwhile, youngsters cop flak for wanting to play all day, slouching around, and looking for easy shortcuts. Amidst this very real cultural noise, Age Twisters attempts to paint a picture of generational harmony through the unlikely duo of a granddaughter and her grandfather.

Naturally, the team brought Age Twisters to Gamescom 2026. Gamemeca managed to sit down with Piccolo Studio co-founders and directors Alexis Corominas and Jordi Ministral to dig into the design philosophy, mechanics, and sheer joy driving the project.

Q. Developing this must have come with hurdles you wouldn't face on a conventional title. Is there anything you really want players to appreciate?

Director Jordi: Early on, when all the moving parts finally came together for a playtest, we experienced a genuinely magical moment. Truth be told, this is our very first co-op game. Everything requires two people, which made testing an absolute headache. But seeing the systems click not just mechanically, but emotionally? That was the high point. For the first time, we caught team members playing because they actually wanted to have fun, not just because it was work. Watching all our ingredients snap into place with something fresh popping up every five minutes—that is the memory that sticks with me.

Director Alexis: We steer clear of split-screen, opting instead for an asymmetric camera. That fundamentally changed how we approached and structured the game. We designed the experience so that everything unfolds within a single room, keeping players from drifting too far apart. Keeping your partner visible on screen at all times was a massive challenge, but we learned a ton from it. Even watching journalists play right now gives us a steady stream of new ideas and tweaks.

Q. What made you settle on a grandfather and granddaughter as the protagonists?

Director Jordi: Because they are family. Family comes with built-in baggage and established dynamics, meaning we didn't need to waste time over-explaining their emotional baseline. If they were friends or random acquaintances, we'd have to jump through hoops to justify why they're on an adventure together. Besides, a grandfather and granddaughter sit at opposite ends of the human timeline. The granddaughter thinks she's all grown up yet still has plenty to learn, making for a fascinating journey. The grandfather, on the other hand, is older, grumpy, tired, and struggling to remember his own youth. Putting these two through opposing arcs lets them learn about aging and relationships. Honestly, nothing beats a family journey, and the core takeaway is that one day, you too will be the grandparent.

Q. How does Age Twisters aim to stand out compared to heavyweights like It Takes Two?

Director Jordi: We are massive fans of the co-op boom, so seeing the genre thrive makes us genuinely happy, and we hope our game adds real value to the space. Above all else, we chase pure fun. We didn't want the controls or technical execution to feel brutally punishing. When you fail, it should tickle your funny bone rather than ruin your afternoon. We wanted parents and kids to sit side-by-side, hurling objects at each other, and still cracking up when things go completely pear-shaped. It's not about how many attempts it took to crack a puzzle, but the shared laughter and strategy sessions you remember on the way.

Q. Older characters seem locked out of certain physical actions. Are these limitations intentional tools to foster mutual understanding?

Director Alexis: Spot on. When you're young, you can leap across rooftops; when you're old, things slow down. People naturally gravitate toward the kid character because they want that speed, but some players intentionally pick the elder just because the dialogue is brilliant. That exact push-and-pull is the experience we engineered.

Director Jordi: That is simply the march of time and what growing older actually means. Letting players inhabit different ages and taste what those decades feel like is the beating heart of this game.

Q. Giving the elderly character a magnet feels a bit unconventional compared to standard special abilities. Is there a specific design logic behind that?

Director Alexis: Older people might not be packing raw strength or blistering speed, but they have wisdom and know how to bend their environment to their will. Magnets are a fantastic device because letting players manipulate surrounding objects makes them feel clever and capable.

Director Jordi: When you're young, your physical body is your main asset, so you just charge in headfirst. But as you age, the body isn't quite what it used to be, leaving experience and wits as your primary tools to outsmart problems. It's identical to seasoned football veterans who control the pitch with clever positioning rather than running themselves ragged. Instead of moving themselves, older folks make the world move around them. That's precisely why we handed the elder a magnet.

Q. Let's talk about the death system. Reverting to a baby when too young or a skeleton when too old is quite a twist. What prompted this design?

Director Jordi: Everything in our game revolves around 'age,' and we wanted to weave that concept into every single fiber of the experience. To keep things breezy for all ages, we deliberately ditched traditional video game tropes like messy corpses or explicit blood-soaked 'deaths.' Combat and shootouts are handled entirely through age manipulation—you turn enemies into babies, or they turn you into one. Even turning into a skeleton is just an extreme expression of aging, and since your partner can just tap a button to bounce you right back to youth, it's never a real game over. It's simply an incapacitated state that requires a teammate to bail you out, keeping the presentation light and family-friendly.

Director Alexis: When you're stuck as a baby, hitting the skill button makes you burst into tears and wail for help; as a skeleton, pressing it makes your bones rattle and twitch. Little touches like that sell the game's cheeky, upbeat tone.

Q. Roughly how long is a standard playthrough?

Director Alexis: What you just sampled is barely half of the tutorial. There are over 50 distinct gimmicks and scenarios waiting down the line. You'll need to chain together various abilities—like slowing down time, shoving objects, or using magnets—and how you tackle those hurdles is entirely up to you. For instance, I lean toward the younger character, but the elder's voice lines are so good I play as them whenever possible. Every choice like that is completely organic.

Director Jordi: Playtimes are going to vary wildly based on playstyle rather than raw mechanical skill. Some players like to put on the brakes, sniff the roses, and listen to every line of dialogue, while others ignore the scenery and speedrun the whole thing. Hell, even Alexis and I play with completely different pacing and approaches.

Q. The game is set in a futuristic Barcelona. How does that distinct local flavor bleed into the game world?

Director Jordi: You don't need to check off Barcelona landmarks like a tourist ticking boxes. Barcelona is a historic city stretching all the way back to the Roman Empire. Millennium-old cathedrals built from stone and brick sit side-by-side with sleek steel-and-glass modern architecture. Early on, we actually built a hyper-realistic Barcelona, but it felt way too on-the-nose, so we scrapped it. Instead, we zeroed in on abstractly capturing how the old and the new coexist—much like our grandfather and child.

Director Alexis: Plus, since the setting is sci-fi future and you visit completely mad, out-there spots like a toy factory or a chicken factory, the experience stretches far beyond a standard city vibe.

Q. The concept is broad enough for everyone, but the controls look a bit demanding. Are there any safety nets for casual players?

Director Alexis: You can play comfortably with a keyboard and mouse. That said, if you're running local co-op, at least one person will need a controller. The difficulty doesn't scale infinitely as you progress; instead, the types of obstacles and situations you deal with—like aiming, shooting, and moving—simply shift. We are carefully balancing the level design so a 10-year-old kid or a 50-year-old adult can pick it up without hitting a wall.

Director Jordi: At its core, it's a twin-stick shooter, meaning you do need the baseline coordination to manipulate a 3D camera and juggle inputs with both thumbs. However, because there are no strict time limits, we're tweaking things so you can calmly line up your crosshairs, swap items, or toss objects. We are also actively looking into adding features like auto-aim.

Q. Since it demands a mix of puzzle-solving and tight controls, will there be difficulty modes or a skip function for struggling players?

Director Alexis: We're still tuning things and can't reveal everything just yet, but accessibility options along those lines are definitely in the works.

Director Jordi: Clunky thumb-skills should never act as a gatekeeper to seeing the rest of the game. If we spot players getting stuck or struggling to figure out what's expected of them, we patch it immediately. A video game should be an adventure shared with loved ones filled with laughs, not a frustrating grudge match against your controller. Even hauling an object from point A to point B should make you feel like you accomplished something together.

Q. Co-op games inevitably let you get in your partner's way. It's usually playful banter, but depending on temperament, it can grate on people. Why include friendly fire elements in a game about harmony?

Director Alexis: For the laughs. Once you get a proper grip on the mechanics, you can easily breeze through without ever accidentally squishing your partner. But if you want to lean into mischief, you can absolutely troll your mate for a laugh—or you can play respectfully and keep your hands to yourself. The choice is yours.

Q. Are there any standalone mini-games tucked away outside the main campaign for some friendly rivalry?

Director Alexis: We opted not to carve out separate mini-games. Everything is tightly anchored to the narrative storyline. However, you will stumble upon quirky puzzles tucked away with hidden chests or coins scattered across the world, which essentially fill that mini-game void.

Q. Finding a co-op partner on the spot isn't always easy. Will online matchmaking be supported?

Director Jordi: We support both local couch co-op and online co-op. We're also featuring a Friend Pass, meaning only one person needs to buy a copy for their buddy to jump online and join the fun.

Q. This is your first major face-to-face with global gamers at Gamescom. Any final words for the audience?

Director Alexis: Grab someone you care about and just have a blast playing it.

Director Jordi: This game is a love letter to doing things together. Watching players crack up and have a good time while playing is the greatest reward and gift I could ever ask for.
