A simulation game dealing with President Park Chung-hee, a figure with stark pros and cons, has landed on Steam. Games dealing with modern South Korean history usually tend to be dipped in specific political leanings, but this one focuses on the hypothetical history of 'What if I become Park Chung-hee' and has been received quite favorably for unwinding various IF stories through a neutral lens.

KMS Studio launched 'For Fatherland and People: The Biography of Park Chung-hee' (hereinafter referred to as The Biography of Park Chung-hee) on Steam on September 4. The game depicts the process of seizing power through the May 16 military coup, forming the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, and seeking ways to revive the economy of South Korea, which was one of the poorest countries at the time. The Economic Planning Board, the Ministry of Finance, the National Assembly, and the judiciary are established, and historical events such as discussions on the Yushin Constitution are also included. Depending on the choices the player makes, as many as 28 different endings await discovery.

The Biography of Park Chung-hee is currently sitting at Very Positive (94%) with 86 user reviews on Steam. Despite tackling such a sensitive historical figure, the title has been praised for providing players with room for contemplation through a neutral perspective devoid of bias toward any particular faction. Some comments even pointed out that it faithfully delivers the kind of entertainment expected from a politics-driven simulation based on alternative history.

Still, a few rough edges were pointed out, such as an unhelpful tutorial, opaque explanations of in-game strategy elements, a somewhat clunky UI, and occasional bugs. The development team has been actively reflecting user feedback through post-launch patches. The 1.03 patch released on September 4 includes ▲ the addition of a sandbox mode, ▲ improvement and expansion of domestic and foreign affairs content, ▲ clearer guidance on national tasks, economic projects, and budget explanations, ▲ a revamped tutorial, and ▲ quality-of-life enhancements such as increased save slots. In the upcoming version 1.1, players will be able to play until 1991 as Kim Jong-pil, the political successor of President Park Chung-hee, and also enjoy playing from 1970 to 1991 as the main rival Kim Dae-jung and the New Democratic Party along with other major opposition parties. Version 1.1 will be rolled out as a free update in the first quarter of next year.
