Activision has dropped a fresh campaign trailer for the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 during the Xbox broadcast at Tokyo Game Show 2026. Word is that acclaimed actor Mads Mikkelsen is starring as the main villain.

Modern Warfare 4 picks up after the assassination of General Shepherd in the predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. With the original special operations unit Task Force 141 disbanded, Captain John Price continues life in hiding.

Price goes rogue, running off-the-books operations like teaming up with cartels and carrying out assassinations to take down enemies. In response, former comrades Ghost and Gaz are given orders to track down, capture, or eliminate Price. Ghost wrestles internally with the justification of Price's methods and whether those convictions have curdled.

The campaign's narrative core pivots around a military invasion of South Korea by North Korea on the Korean Peninsula. Amidst the ensuing chaotic firefights, a compounding crisis unfolds as an unidentified weapon—powerful enough to upend international power dynamics—is transported to mysterious foes. Both the team hunting Price and hostile factions lock their sights on a shadowy figure known as 'Archer', who is hell-bent on securing the weapon.

The latter half of the trailer reveals Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Archer, dropping the line, "I will make you cry out for mercy," to threaten Price. Mads Mikkelsen previously played villains in Casino Royale, the TV series Hannibal, and the video game Death Stranding as Cliff Unger.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches officially on October 23. No matter the distribution platform, players who pre-order any digital download edition can dive into the campaign early starting October 16.
