A new trailer for the remake of the Chinese-Taiwanese wuxia RPG series, 'Sword and Fairy 4', was released on the 29th. It is currently stirring debate, as many are pointing out its striking resemblance to the 2025 title 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33'.

The 'Sword and Fairy' series has been a long-running RPG staple since the original debut in 1995, stretching all the way to its seventh installment in 2021. Rooted in xianxia—a world of Taoism and wuxia—it whisks players through the demon, immortal, and celestial realms. While the first five titles stuck to turn-based combat, the series experimented with semi-turn-based mechanics in the sixth entry, before pivoting to full real-time action for the seventh.

The gameplay footage for the fourth entry's remake, released on the 29th, shows a massive graphical overhaul while sticking to the original's turn-based roots. Producer Zhang Xiaoquan noted, "Sword and Fairy was always intended as an ensemble piece; having multiple characters on screen is the most intuitive way to showcase their distinct combat styles and personalities." He added, "Since the systems, narrative, and characters are so tightly woven, we envisioned this as a turn-based game from the very beginning."

However, some gamers are pointing out similarities to 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33'. Critics are flagging everything from the enemy-player camera angles and the noticeably grittier tone compared to the original, to the parry mechanics, skill particle effects, and even the UI layout. There is also discussion that the current vibe feels different from the first reveal trailer shown last year.

In response, producer Zhang Xiaoquan stated, "We are fully aware of the concerns voiced by players," adding, "We intend to proceed with the utmost reverence and caution."

The release date for the Sword and Fairy 4 remake remains unconfirmed, though it is currently slated for PC and consoles.
