The story came to light on August 3rd through the YouTube channel of former Valve writer Chet Faliszek. In a video titled 'Cutting Left 4 Dead Lines', Faliszek shared various behind-the-scenes stories from the development of Left 4 Dead 2, touching on voice recording sessions and technical limitations. Among them, Faliszek discussed clashes with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), revealing that a frustrated development team purposely leaked the trailer out of sheer annoyance.

Faliszek explained, "During development, Valve was locking horns with the ESRB over violence issues, which led us to scrap all the heavy swearing from the game." Faliszek added that the ESRB even tried to block the release of the Left 4 Dead 2 trailer entirely, prompting the disgruntled developers to sneakily leak it ahead of the official announcement. "It was twenty years ago anyway, so admitting to it now probably will not get anyone into trouble," Faliszek chuckled.

While Faliszek did not explicitly pinpoint which specific leak it was, the timeline strongly points to the cinematic trailer that leaked in October 2009, just a month prior to the game's launch. Running at around three minutes and currently serving as the game's intro sequence, it features the protagonists Coach, Ellis, Nick, and Rochelle fighting off hordes of zombies with guns, chainsaws, and a whole lot of grit.
