A Russian middle schooler recently found themselves under investigation by Interpol after unleashing a torrent of abuse in the chat room of 'Brawl Stars'.

According to a report on the 13th from the Russian outlet 'Baza', the incident unfolded back in May. A 14-year-old student from Saint Petersburg, referred to by the pseudonym 'Maxim', was busy causing trouble under the in-game moniker 'Mushroom Papa'. Maxim’s penchant for hurling insults at fellow players eventually landed the account in the penalty box with a suspension.

The real trouble started a few days later, when local police knocked on the door of the father, requesting that the father and the student appear at the station for questioning. The catalyst for this police intervention was a formal request from Interpol. Interpol had obtained data from Google—the service platform for Brawl Stars—which included incriminating screenshots of the in-game chat logs.

In these screenshots, Maxim was seen clashing with others, using aggressive language that included religious insults and a specific threat: 'I will buy a pistol to punish you.' This appears to have triggered the international investigation. While Maxim claimed that the remark about buying a pistol was merely metaphorical regarding in-game actions, the logic falls flat; in Brawl Stars, characters come with their own fixed weaponry, making the purchase of a separate pistol impossible.

Following a stern investigation by Russian authorities, Maxim was released, though Baza reports that the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs is continuing its probe into the student under Article 148 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, which covers the violation of freedom of conscience and religion.

This episode serves as a stark reminder that Interpol is increasingly willing to intervene in online gaming toxicity when the rhetoric crosses a dangerous line. While Interpol has historically focused on serious matters like drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, or the operation of private servers, it is now clear that they will track down threats made within virtual spaces if they deem the danger to be substantial.
