Game Science, the developer that stunned the world with its display of Chinese single-player prowess in Black Myth: Wukong, has unveiled its next project. This time, the spotlight falls on 'Zhong Kui', the legendary deity known for exorcising demons.

During the Gamescom Opening Night Live event on the 20th, Game Science revealed its new action RPG, 'Black Myth: Zhong Kui'. As a deity from Chinese mythology tasked with vanquishing malevolent spirits and wicked beings, the title suggests a journey centered on hunting down various ghouls and ghosts.

The most famous tale surrounding Zhong Kui originates from a dream had by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. While suffering from an illness, the Emperor dreamt of a spirit-devouring entity protecting the palace from thieves. Upon waking, the Emperor found the illness had vanished, promptly ordering a court painter to capture the image of Zhong Kui. The resulting portrait spread among the public, cementing Zhong Kui's reputation as a god of exorcism.

In life, Zhong Kui was a scholar of immense talent, capable of achieving top honors in the imperial examinations, yet was denied advancement due to an unsightly appearance. Feeling deeply insulted, Zhong Kui took his own life at the palace steps, eventually ascending to become the deity who hunts demons. The character's signature look—bulging eyes, a dark complexion, a thick beard, and a fearsome expression—is iconic. Meanwhile, the Chinese developer Game Science, having captured global attention last year with the Journey to the West-inspired action RPG 'Black Myth: Wukong', now faces the challenge of maintaining that momentum.
