The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability is demanding that major gaming and platform executives testify before Congress, following the tragic shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

On the 17th, Chairman James Comer of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Accountability issued a summons for Discord CEO Jason Citron, Valve President Gabe Newell, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, and Reddit CEO Steve Huffman to appear as witnesses at a full committee hearing on October 8th. The hearing aims to address the radicalization of users across online forums.

Chairman James Comer stated, "In the wake of the politically motivated tragedy of Charlie Kirk's assassination and a surge in politically driven violence, Congress has a duty to oversee the online platforms that extremists have utilized to incite such violence." The Chairman added, "To prevent future radicalization and violence, the CEOs of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit must appear before the oversight committee to explain what measures they are taking to ensure their platforms are not being weaponized for malicious purposes."

Charlie Kirk was killed in a shooting during a public debate held at Utah Valley University on September 10th. The perpetrator, Tyler Robinson, reportedly surrendered following the intervention of his father and an acquaintance. Immediately after the incident, Robinson sent a message via Discord admitting to the crime. Furthermore, the ammunition used in the attack was reportedly engraved with text related to 'Helldivers 2' and various internet memes.

Recently, a growing chorus of politicians in the U.S. has been pointing to video games as a primary driver of gun violence. On the 11th, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., cited psychiatric medication abuse, video games, and social media as the root causes of gun-related incidents, announcing that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently investigating these links. The upcoming hearing on October 8th is widely seen as an attempt to assign responsibility to the games and online forums where the perpetrator was most active.
