Krafton is turning up the chill—or rather, turning it down—in 'PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS' with the 39.1 update, introducing the frostbitten 'Erangel: Subzero'. This patch brings more than just a cold snap; expect a collaboration with luxury fashion house Balenciaga, the permanent return of the User Generated Content (UGC) Alpha mode, and a fresh round of weapon balancing.

The heart of this update lies in the transformation of Erangel. Thanks to a botched climate-control satellite experiment by Tythonic, the map has been plunged into a deep freeze. You will see snow falling and piling up in real-time. To really turn the screws on your survival chances, the Blue Zone now packs a 'Freezing Effect'.

Keep an eye out for crashed satellite debris scattered across the map. The devs have also added new visual flair, including redesigned planes and chilling screen effects during your descent. If you fancy dishing out the cold yourself, look out for Blue Zone Grenades and the new Blue Zone Grenade Launcher. This Subzero crisis is set to persist into the 39.2 update, ensuring Erangel stays an absolute nightmare to survive in.

The UGC Alpha is also making a comeback, and this time it is here to stay as a permanent feature rather than a temporary fling. New gadgets like destructible objects, smoke effects, lighting, and AI spawn devices have been added to the toolkit. Your inventory options have also seen an expansion, now including Ghillie Suits, first-aid gear, tactical bags, and self-AEDs.

Then there is the collaboration with Balenciaga. You will find a Balenciaga-themed space hidden inside Erangel's secret rooms, along with branded care packages. The collection includes surreal outfits, emotes, sprays, parachutes, and even a frying pan skin. You can snag these items starting December 3 on PC and December 11 on consoles, with sales running until early January 2026.

The 39.1 update also tweaks the weapon meta. The recoil for the M416, SKS, and SLR has been softened, while the AUG and VSS are now a bit more unruly. The VSS also got a volume boost on its firing sound, so you will have a better chance of pinpointing the source of those shots when you inevitably get caught in its crosshairs.
