Look, let's be honest, Traeae: Unbound caught quite a few eyes when it was announced for Gamescom 2026. Published by Krafton and developed by Boundary, this Eastern-themed action game boasts a seasoned development team with roots in titles like Undecember, making it a rather fascinating prospect from the get-go.

During the Gamescom Opening Night Live, the developer showed off some wonderfully rare classes like the tiger hunter and geomancer—archetypes you rarely stumble upon in mainstream gaming. Naturally, crowds flocked to the Krafton booth to try it out. Having actually gone hands-on with Traeae: Unbound, I can report that while there is still plenty of polishing left before the finish line, the core vision shines through brilliantly.

Eastern classes like the tiger hunter and geomancer

Traeae: Unbound features four distinct Eastern-flavoured classes: samurai, tiger hunter, asura, kunoichi, shaman, and geomancer. The demo let players test drive a handful of these, including the samurai and the geomancer. The samurai plays as a stance-switching melee dealer, whereas the geomancer acts as an area-of-effect nuker wielding the five elements.

For this particular session, the tiger hunter felt like the most fitting choice. Wielding a weapon that sits somewhere between a rifle and a small cannon, this class relies heavily on blasting shotgun shells, lobbing explosive arcs, and setting traps. To top it all off, you get an animal companion—choosing between a falcon, a Sapsali dog, or a monkey with unique skills—making it a remarkably friendly pick for beginners.

The equipment follows suit with distinctly Korean and Eastern motifs. The tiger hunter sports a matchlock alongside ammo bandoliers. Other gear includes traditional navigational tools like the 'Nakyeong' geomantic compass and fans serving as auxiliary accessories. Naturally, each piece of equipment tacks on stat boosts like increased skill damage or enhanced basic attacks.

The aesthetic touches do not stop at gear. From the wooden loot crates to the snow-covered landscapes where enemies ambush you, the atmosphere practically breathes with Korean mountain ranges and woodlands. Classes outside of the tiger hunter also flaunt combat postures and Taoist arts that feel miles away from standard western fantasy.

A top-down action game that refuses to coddle you

Traeae: Unbound adopts a top-down perspective. While you might spot some hack-and-slash DNA, do not expect to waltz in and wipe out whole screens of enemies with a single button press like in Diablo or Path of Exile. Instead, it demands careful positioning, deliberate movement, and precise attacks. Frankly, it is quite demanding.

As a ranged specialist, the tiger hunter relies on a rolling evasion mechanic to slip out of harms way. Dodging consumes stamina, but nailing a last-second evade refunds a portion of that resource, encouraging the kind of high-risk, high-reward playstyle we all secretly adore.

There is also a manual reload system to keep you on your toes. Basic attacks chip away at a visible ammo UI on screen, and once it hits zero, you are forced into a breathless reload phase where survival depends entirely on evasion. These minute design choices tell you everything you need to know about the games intended challenge level.

The demo did not lay out every single skill or passive mastery, but each class clearly packs a signature ultimate-style attack alongside extensive passive trees. In particular, the sprawling, node-based progression grid evoked strong memories of Path of Exile's massive skill trees.

Eastern-flavoured boss fights that bite back

Most of the foes you encounter take the form of ghosts, yokai, and twisted beasts, ambushing you as you pop open chests or push through the narrative. They pressure you with flying projectiles and aggressive close-quarters lunges. Coupled with the atmospheric setting, even standard campaign encounters hit hard enough that a single mistake feels catastrophic.

Later on, a mini-boss stood in the way. While its move set was not overly labyrinthine, it demanded crisp dodges and hit hard enough to send you scrambling for a healing potion immediately. Thankfully, the tiger hunter can comfortably chip away at health pools from afar with shotgun blasts and artillery barrages.

The final boss encountered was properly menacing. It featured a brilliant gimmick: plunging the arena into darkness while raising pillars from the previously flat floor. Running back into the light let you resume dealing damage, but lingering in the shadows meant eating swift, punishing strikes from the darting boss. Given the blinding speed of the boss and the clever arena mechanics, it left a genuinely lasting impression.

Despite wearing the clothes of a top-down action game with hordes of enemies and flashy skills, the overall philosophy leans much closer to a pure action game than a mindless hack-and-slash. Enemies boast hefty health pools and devastating attacks, forcing you to trade blows carefully rather than melting screens instantly.
