Piki Studios, a three-person game development outfit based in Brazil, launched its hand-drawn, pixel-art survival title Mayday: The Survival Island on Steam on November 3rd.

The game drops you—yes, you, stranded and alone on a remote island following a mysterious plane crash—into an unfamiliar wilderness where building a base is priority number one. You will gather resources through hunting, fishing, and foraging. There is also plenty of busywork to keep you occupied, such as cultivating crops, tending to flocks of sheep, or dragging wild buffaloes back to domesticate. You can cook your catches into proper meals, unlock crafting recipes for tools and potions via workstations, and slowly unravel the island's hidden mysteries.

Mayday: The Survival Island tries to stand out from the dreary survival crowd by introducing a 'Comfort System'. While most games in the genre treat building a roof over your head as the grand finale, here, interior design directly impacts your actual odds of staying alive. Right-clicking with a hammer opens up a building and decorating menu featuring walls, doors, floors, tables, chairs, rugs, and vases. Every single piece of furniture placed boosts your 'Comfort Level', which in turn grants survival perks like increased health pools and slower energy drain.

Piki Studios has crafted an archipelago made up of 24 uniquely designed islands. Each island boasts its own distinct resources, meaning you will have to set sail for uncharted shores whenever you need specific materials. From fog-drenched swamps and ancient graveyards to forgotten ruins, these biomes each carry their own atmosphere, stories, and secrets. You are free to explore, build, breed livestock, and fight at your own leisure with no rigid goals holding your hand.

Mayday: The Survival Island is currently selling on Steam for 15,000 KRW, though a 20% launch discount brings the price down to 12,000 KRW until November 17th. The game comes with official Korean subtitles, Steam Achievements, Cloud support, and full controller compatibility.
