On the 10th, Webzen inked a deal with Naver Webtoon to license the 'Tyrant of the Defense Game' IP. This agreement grants Webzen the rights to develop and publish a strategy title based on the work, with development duties falling to their subsidiary, Webzen Crevics, while Webzen handles the publishing side of things.

For those uninitiated, the webtoon follows a protagonist who, after finishing a famously brutal game, finds himself trapped inside it. To survive, he must navigate a series of high-stakes missions. With its focus on character growth and intricate interpersonal dynamics, the story has already cultivated a fiercely loyal fan base across both the original novel and the webtoon.

Currently codenamed 'Project D1', Webzen Crevics is crafting this title using Unreal Engine 5. It’s a curious blend of tower defense and dungeon offense elements. The team is aiming to bake the core loops of 'exploration, city management, and defense' directly into the gameplay. Visually, they’ve opted for a 2.5D pixel-art aesthetic to reinterpret the original world. They claim they are adding independent design elements to ensure it stands out from the source material.

Webzen is clearly looking to broaden its portfolio beyond the usual suspects, using this IP to expand its content-driven development reach. They’re positioning this for both domestic and international markets, hoping to sharpen their edge in the crowded strategy genre.
