'Namco Sugamo,' a legendary arcade for fighting games located in Toshima City, Tokyo, will cease operations on March 22, 2026. Originally opened in February 1984 under the name 'Play City Carrot Sugamo,' this establishment has been a beloved hub for gamers for over 40 years, widely recognized as a mecca for the fighting game community.

The arcade specialized in various fighting games, most notably the Tekken series. Industry figures, including Tekken series director Kohei Ikeda, have expressed their sadness over the closure, referring to the venue as their 'second home.' Many gamers built relationships and memories here, and it was particularly renowned as a gathering spot for players looking to hone their skills. Its status is comparable to that of the Noryangjin Jeongin Arcade or Daerim Geurim Game Land in Korea.

Namco Sugamo was once one of the largest company-operated arcades. Due to its proximity to several schools, it was bustling with students on weekday afternoons, and when the deadline for high-score magazine submissions approached, top players from across the country would visit to set new records. It was also famous as a location test site for new games and a frequent stop for industry insiders conducting site visits.

In July 2012, the arcade underwent a major renovation to cater specifically to gamers. Even as the trend shifted toward casual family-oriented customers, the arcade maintained its identity as a space for competitive fighting game players, establishing a community area and a Tekken museum. It solidified its reputation as a Tekken mecca by hosting events featuring professional players such as Korea's JDCR and Japan's Yuu.

Namco Sugamo will continue to operate normally until its final day on March 22, 2026. Management has announced plans to host special events for visitors leading up to the closure.
