He argued that politicians are using concerns over the generation of child sexual abuse material as a pretext to censor their political rivals, asserting that an open platform is necessary to prevent such overreach.

The controversy began when it was revealed that Elon Musk's AI, Grok, could generate explicit imagery, including deepfakes of real people and minors. In response, some U.S. lawmakers requested that Apple and Google remove X and Grok from their app stores, and the UK government is reportedly considering sanctions, including potential access blocks under its Online Safety Act.

Sweeney took to social media to point out that the behavior of politicians pressuring platform operators to selectively suppress their rivals is a form of crony capitalism. He emphasized that all major AI models have experienced malfunctions, and while developers are working to mitigate these issues, no system is perfect.

Regarding counterarguments that Grok is being misused for illegal acts such as generating illicit imagery and leaking IP addresses, Sweeney clarified that he does not condone such behavior.
