Apple, which has been struggling with its own AI development, is turning to Google, which is expanding its influence based on Gemini. Apple has decided to build the AI models for its devices, including the iPhone, based on Google's Gemini.

Google and Apple released a joint statement on the 12th announcing their partnership. Through this, the two companies have signed a multi-year agreement, and accordingly, the next-generation Apple Foundation Models will be developed based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology.

Apple Foundation Models are Apple's proprietary AI LLMs, forming the foundation of Apple Intelligence, an AI service installed on Apple devices such as the iPhone. Apple Intelligence provides personalized features by learning from user data, and supports a more useful Siri, writing tools, and image editing and generation.

Building these Apple Foundation Models based on Google's Gemini means that Apple is seeking to advance its AI by leveraging Google's technical prowess. In fact, Apple stated in a joint statement, "It will contribute to powering key features of Apple Intelligence, including the more personalized Siri to be released this year," and added, "After careful review, we determined that Google's AI technology provides the most excellent foundation for the Apple Foundation Models."

Apple explained that even after the two companies' collaboration, Apple Intelligence will maintain its privacy protection standards and operate within Apple devices and the Private Cloud Compute environment. Private Cloud Compute is a privacy-protecting environment that recognizes user personal information but does not store the data.

If AI based on Gemini is installed on an estimated 2.3 billion Apple devices, Google's influence is expected to increase significantly.
