Hades II has been crowned Metacritic’s Game of the Year for 2025.

Metacritic unveiled their top pick on the 6th. To be in the running, a title must have been released this year and boast at least seven professional reviews. For cross-platform releases, they use the version with the highest number of critic scores, while expansions and mobile titles are strictly excluded.

The winner, Hades II, snagged an impressive 95 on the Switch 2. This roguelike action title, which saw its full release last September, follows Melinoë—the sister of the original game’s protagonist—as she takes on the Titan army within the depths of Greek mythology.

Critics reckon both the action and the narrative have surpassed its predecessor. While keeping the core combat, weapons, and magic that made the first game a hit, it introduces a richer variety of paths and deeper character interactions. The studio has also been praised for layering in a more profound story and clever challenges, ensuring that the repetitive grind never feels like a chore.
